Steepling his fingers across his mouth, Finnan looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. “He’ll be heading north. Try Westport.”

“What’s in Westport?”

He heaved a sigh, rubbing at the back of his neck. “Just go up there and see if you can locate him.”

“And what do you want me to do when I find him?”

My boss remained strangely—and uncharacteristically—quiet.

Motherfucker. He was still hesitating over this shit. This was exactly why I didn’t get attached to people.

Liar, an insidious voice whispered.

I bit out my next words, wondering why in the fuck it was me who was pressing Finnan with this. This was fucking Keir’s job. “The rules are there for a reason, Finnan.” My voice was cold. Unyielding.

“I know.”

“AndIknow he has to eat a bullet for what he did.”

He slammed his fist onto the desktop. “I fuckingknow!” His nostrils flared as he stared me down. “I know, but he’s …”

“Your brother,” I finished for him, saying the words he couldn’t bring himself to say.

“Could you kill your brother?” Finnan demanded, his anger growing.

“Never had one, so I couldn’t tell you.”

AmotherI could kill, though.

He heaved a sigh, his gaze fixed on the desk. When he finally brought his eyes back to my face, there was a ghost of regret hovering there. “Bring him in. Unharmed.”

I thought Finnan was a fucking idiot for stringing this thing out, but I wasn’t the goddamned boss. I just followed orders. Rising from my seat, I moved to the door. When I reached for the handle, Finnan’s words stopped me. “Take Nightingale with you.”

Nightingale. I clenched my jaw. “Why does she need to come?”

“You might need her.”

I did need Fallon, just not in the way he was implying.

“Plus, Grayson told me some shit about her. She doesn’t like being alone around strange men. She doesn’t seem to mind you, though, so take her with you. It’ll give me time to think about what I want to do with her after this shit with the Bèar Clan blows over.”

Clenching my hands into tight fists at my side, I returned to my room where I found Fallon pacing the length of the floorboards. She turned to face me, wrapping her arms protectively around her upper body.

Finnan’s words echoed in my head.

She doesn’t seem to mind you, though.

“I thought you were leaving.”

“I am. You’re coming with me.”

“What?” Her eyes darted around the room before landing back on my face. “You’re taking me to Limerick with you?”

Dammit, I had to ignore that fucking flicker of relief in her voice. I also tried to ignore how amazing she looked wearing one of my shirts. “No. Get dressed. You’ve got five minutes to pack.”

“Where are we going?” she called out as I turned to leave.

“Out.” I shut the door and went downstairs, finding Keir nursing a glass of whisky in the kitchen.
