Sheblinked once. Twice.“What?”

“It’sninethirty. You havehalf an hour togettoclass.”

Shejumped up fromthecouch,almostknocking her empty platefromthecushion besideher.“I havetogetready. I haveto gobacktotheapartmentand takeashower.”

“Checkin your room herefirst. You werein such a hurrytoleavethatsomeofyour clotheswere overlooked.”

“I feel terrible,”sheshot backwith a small grin.“Seriously,don’tlet medrinktequila again.”

“You gotit.Wantmetowalkyou touniversity?”

“Areyouheading thatway?”

“I wasgoingtotakeErin toCentralPark.”

Shewaved awayhisoffer.“It’sintheoppositedirection. I’ll beokay.”

Hestalked towardsher,wrapping a firmarmaround her waistand pulling her inclosetohis body. Hiskisswasdemanding,letting herknowthatalthough theydidn’thavetimeto get reacquainted now,thattimewould comelater.

Theyrodetheelevator down together,parting waysoutthefront. Hesaid,“I’ll seeyouthis afternoon.”

Shegotupon her toesand kissed hischeek.“Seeyouthen.”

Maxhadbeenrunningforabouttwentyminuteswhenhisphonerang.Pullingthestrollertoastop, hewheeled Erinofftotheside ofthetrackand dug ahand intohispocket.

“Evangeline,”Maxsaid,breathing hard, “howare you?”

“Did Icatchyou atabad time?” hisbossasked.

“No,justoutfor arun withErin. What’sup?”

“Itsoundslike NewYorkisagreeing withyou. I kindofhatetobethe bearerofbad news.”

“You’vefilledthepositions,haven’t you?”

“Oneofthem,yeah.TheguytakingoverforyouisnamedBrianWilson.Ihead-huntedhimfrom BembewhenI heard hewaslooking around.”

Maxwhistled.He’dheard ofBembebefore;itwas votedone ofNewYork’stopdanceclubs. “Whataboutthehead bartender position?”

“I’mstillwaitingbacktohearfromafewpeople.Jeremyisjustgoingtohavetostickitoutfora bitlonger.”
