She immediately replies.

Autumn: Sure. I’ll be right there.

I tuck my phone in the pocket of my shorts and take the elevator down to the first floor. A goofy smile is pasted to my lips as I walk across the lobby, and it might remain there for the entire football season.

I step outside into the bright sunshine that seems to mirror my mood. When I reach Autumn’s car, she’s already there, leaning back against the driver’s side door. As soon as she notices me, she straightens up and starts toward me, meeting me halfway.

“Hey,” I say.

“Hey, what’s going on?”

“You’re looking at the starting quarterback for the Virginia Silverbacks.”

“Oh my God!” she squeals, throwing her arms around me. Lifting her from her feet, I spin her around and around until we’re both dizzy.

She presses a soft kiss to my lips. “Congratulations, Rogan.”

“Thank you. I can’t believe this is really happening. I’ve thought about it for so long, it feels like a dream.”

“It’s real, and I’m so happy for you. You deserve every bit of this success, and I know you’re going to crush it as the quarterback.”

“I appreciate your confidence in me.”

“Always. I’ve seen how much heart and soul you play with. I just know this is going to be fantastic in so many ways. I don’tknow if you’re ready for the kind of game and recognition you’re about to be hit with.”

“As long as you’re by my side to help me, that’s all I need.”

“This might mean upping your social media presence.”

“I can do that, but I’m never giving up my memes. They make the world a better place.”

She laughs. “You can have your memes but branch out a little with your posting. I’ll help you make some reels.”

I press a kiss to her forehead. “You’re so sweet.” Her eyebrows shoot skyward. “What?”

“I don’t think anyone has ever described me as sweet before.”

“Maybe you were just waiting for the right person—me—to bring that side out of you.”

“Maybe.”

“I’ve got to get down to the weight room for a session. I’ll see your gorgeous self later,” I say, tapping the end of her nose with my finger.

“I’m proud of you,” she says, smiling. Her praise hits me with the force of a linebacker. I have to battle with the strong emotion it stirs up, or I’ll cry in Autumn’s arms like a baby.

“Thank you,” I husk. “Knowing that means the world to me. I hate that I need to get going but I’ll be late if I don’t. Oh, and don’t share the news with anyone yet. They’re going to announce it tomorrow.”

“No problem. I wouldn’t do that anyway.”

I jog back toward the stadium and head inside to the weight room. Cooper, Griffin, and Thor are already running on the treadmills.

“Hey, guys.” I jump on an empty one next to Cooper and start with a slow jog to warm up.

Griffin nods at me. “Sup?”

“Anyone else starving besides me?” Thor asks.

“Yeah, I could go for a buffalo chicken wrap like we had the other day,” Cooper says.
