“Why does everyone think I can’t bake?”

“Maybe because I took home economics with you and the teacher said – and I quote here – ‘I’ve never seen a student with such little aptitude for the kitchen.’”

“I have other skills.”

“I hope those skills include operating a cash register since it’s time to open.” She motions to the line of patrons waiting outside.

“Don’t worry. I got this.”

If I can get Flynn, the man who thinks being with me is a betrayal to my brother, to cave for me, I can do anything.

Chapter 28

Never bring a seal on a secret mission

Flynn

“What are we doing? Where are we going?” Sophia bounces in the passenger seat of my truck as we drive toward Rogue’s Landing.

“It’s a secret mission.”

She rolls her eyes. “I figured as much when you told me to change into clothes I don’t mind getting dirty and then ordered me into the car.”

“And those are the clothes you chose?” I nod to her outfit. She’s wearing a pair of designer jeans and a blouse. She looks more ready to hit the mall to go shopping than go on a secret mission.

“These clothes can get dirty, but what if this secret mission ends up with me getting my picture taken? I want to look my best.”

“Maybe I should have left you at home,” I mumble.

She slaps my shoulder. “Wrong answer. You’re going to need my skills for our secret mission.”

“You don’t know what the mission is.”

“But I’m certain I have a skill that will come in handy.”

“Let’s hope so.”

“I have skills, mister. Just you wait and see.” She feigns boxing.

I grasp her hands and push them down into her lap. “There will be no boxing. Which is a good thing since you obviously don’t know how to box.”

“I do too!”

I lift an eyebrow. “Really?”

“Don’t you remember the time I decked Tammy the traitor in junior high?”

“Tammy the traitor?”

“She told on us for skipping biology class. Traitor. There was no way I was dissecting a frog. None of us were. Except Paisley. She refused to skip with us.”

Ah, now I remember. “As I recall you pulled her hair.”

“And she cried and begged for her mommy.”

“Did she cry as much as you did when you had detention?”

She gasps. “I did not cry about getting detention. I would never.”
