His mouth was on my neck. “Let me take care of you.” His hand skirted up my leg, but I stopped him.

“No, I’m good.” I snatched my cardigan up and tried to force levity into my voice. “This wasn’t a tit-for-tat thing. Like at the movies.”

I laughed lightly while smoothing my dress. He was quiet as he buckled up his pants. I could feel his eyes on me, even in the semi-dark.

“So,” I said cheerily, pretending my brain wasn’t whirring and my heart wasn’t about to beat right out of my chest, “how about dessert?”

After he buckled his pants, he took my hand. “Sure.”

Shit. He knew I was panicking.

“I need chocolate, to be specific.” I squeezed his hand and giggled.

He nodded without saying a word, guiding me back toward the parking lot. Fortunately, the parking lot was empty now.

“I know just the place,” I added lightly. “A grocery store nearby has a hell of a chocolate cake with Bavarian cream filling.”

He pulled me to a stop at my car, forcing me to face him.

“What’s going on, Betty?” His jaw clenched, he scowled down at me, still holding my hand tightly. “You’re freaking out because I told you I loved you, aren’t you?”

“No! Not at all.” I blew out a breath. “I mean, maybe. Just a little.”

“Not a little. You’re freaking the fuck out right now. I can feel it.”

“Don’t get mad.”

He nodded and looked away, seeming to calm himself. “I’m not mad.”

“Look, I get it. It was the heat of the moment. I’m totally amazing at giving blow jobs.” I dropped his hand and poked him playfully in the ribs.

“Don’t even make light of this,” he grumbled. “And sure as hell don’t remind me you’ve had practice. It makes me want to murder people I’ve never met.”

“Okay then.” I crossed my arms and leaned back against my car.

His gaze hardened as he watched me. Then he shook his head. “No fucking way.”

He unfolded my arms and cupped my face, pressing his body close, his grave expression intense. Even so, his voice remained steady and calm but low and deep.

“Listen, Betty. I don’t want you putting up defenses and playing this off. I don’t expect you to say it back. But I need you to know that it wasn’t a slip-up in the heat of the moment.”

He drew closer, his face inches from mine, burning me up with those hazel-gold eyes.

“I love you. I know I do. And I’m fine waiting for you. Just…” he shook his head, brow pinching again. “No pushing me out because this scares the shit out of you. I know it does.”

“How do you know?”

“I’m a good people reader. I’ve seen the signs that you’re a bit of a commitment-phobe.”

“I amnot,” I lied.

At that, he smiled sweetly and pressed a kiss to my lips. “You are.”

At first, I didn’t respond but then he slid his tongue along my bottom lip and I couldn’t help myself. Curling my hands into his hair, I kissed him back. He kept it gentle and soft before finally pulling away.

“You did scramble my brains on those bleachers, though.”

My smile broke wide. “I’m good, huh?”
