Lily snort-laughed. “Of course, you are. Mr. Burke always dances with his wife at these things.”

Somehow, knowing that the ogling Mr. Burke enjoyed dancing with his wife made me like the man a little more. Or disdain him a little less.

Without another word, Bennett tugged on my hand and pulled me a few feet away, off to the side of the dancers near the cutout of Ariel and Eric. I ignored Trace and Caroline slow dancing together while smirking at me. I gave them the wide-eyed look that saidmind your own business, but they just laughed before turning to look at each other.

I’d been jittery and annoyed all night, not quite sure why. But when Bennett swept me into his arms, one hand on my waist, the other pressed against my back, holding me close, my sour mood vanished instantly.

Honestly, it had vanished when I saw him walking across the room. Some tender nascent feeling I’d never known spread its wings inside my chest, flapping wildly to break free. With both my arms around his neck, fingers playing in the edges of his hair that curled the tiniest bit, I stared up at him.

We were barely dancing, hardly moving, just staring and holding each other like lovestruck teenagers. How fitting.

“I thought you had a fundraiser,” I finally said.

“I did. But I didn’t want to be there.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to be here.”

Again, my stomach fluttered with excitement.

“No hot chicks there who could keep you away from me?”

His face remained serious as he clutched me tighter and shook his head.

I arched a brow, “But there were hot chicks there.”

He rolled his eyes.

“Tell me who.”

“Mandy Harper was there,” he admitted.

Suddenly, my sweet, floaty birdlike feeling transformed into something ragey with teeth and talons.

“I’ll bet she was all over you.”

The thought of it made my blood boil.

He shrugged, which was a yes. I looked away, not liking this wretched feeling that inspired murderous thoughts. He redirected my gaze back to his with a finger under my chin.

“Are you jealous?” There was a definite gleam of utter glee shining in his whiskey-warm eyes, his face lit from the sparkly lights overhead.

“You find this funny? That bitch better keep her hands to herself.”

He chuckled at my harsh threat. “Or what?”

“Or I’ll break them,” I said sweetly, meaning it and wondering where this violent streak had come from.

He burst out laughing and hugged me tighter when I tried to wiggle away.

“No, no, no,” he murmured into my temple. “This jealous side of you is fascinating.”

I was so riled up, spitting mad, that I was about to pinch him to get out of his hold when Lily popped up beside us.

“Hey, Betty. You guys get out of here.”

That stalled my temper tantrum. Bennett loosened, and I glanced down at my watch. “I have thirty more minutes left for my duty.”
