“Not all the way there. Just yet.”

“I need a break.”

Laughing, I said, “I do, too.” Then I kissed her lips, sweeping my tongue in a slow exploration of her sweet mouth. “Stay the night with me.”

I didn’t hide my vulnerability or my need for her to stay when I asked her, more like I softly begged her to stay with me. I let her see my need, for once not feeling like I had to hide. Not from her.

She had work in the morning, and if it had been me, I’d be thinking of all the things I had to do the next day and how sleeping at someone else’s house would only throw a hitch in my daily ritual. So I’d expected her to say no.

Instead, she brushed her fingertips into my hair and smiled, whispering softly, “Okay.” Without a word of protest.

Where had this girl come from? Where had she been?

Heaving a relieved breath, I took care of the condom again in the bathroom, then returned to bed, where my beautiful girl was going to sleep in my arms.

When I slipped under the covers, she instantly rolled away and then backed up, letting me haul her close, spooning her from behind. My whole body and mind were completely relaxed. Not a worry or concern niggling me as it usually did before sleep.

Now that I thought about it, these past couple of weeks with Betty had been much less stressful when it should’ve been the opposite, opening the store. Interesting that I’d also avoided my father during this time when I normally never would. Never had.

He wasn’t a terrible man. He was a good man, actually. But a stern father who expected a lot. Especially out of me since he’d given up on molding Hale into the perfect businessman.

Releasing a heavy breath, I pulled her closer, tucking her tight against me. A sense of belonging and lightness filled me.

“You’re a cuddler,” she murmured on a soft, throaty laugh.

“Never have been before,” I confessed, hoping that didn’t scare her off.

After a minute, she hugged my forearm tighter where it wrapped around her waist. With a contented sigh, I fell asleep faster than I ever had.

Chapter Seventeen

~BETTY~

Bennett had wokenme in the middle of the night, his mouth between my legs. I didn’t complain. Before I came again, he slid inside me for the third time and rocked us both to a slow, mind-tilting orgasm. At least, it was for me. But maybe that was because I’d been half asleep.

When morning light filtered through his shutters, I’d woken this time to a freshly showered and grinning Bennett bringing me coffee in bed. He was also fully dressed in his business attire best, ready for work.

“What time is it?” I asked, exhausted, considering calling in a sick day.

What would I put on my excuse card?Thoroughly fucked by the local grocerwasn’t on the check-off list of excuses.

“Six-fifteen. Get a shower, and I’ll have breakfast ready when you’re finished. You’ll still have time to get home and uh…” His gaze roamed to my bare breasts when I sat up, letting the covers fall.

I blinked innocently at him, lifting the coffee cup and taking a loud sip. His mouth slack-jawed, and his perkiness fell away as he stared openly.

“Get home and what, Bennett?”

“I have no idea what I was saying.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, setting the coffee cup down. I pushed off the covers to walk the few steps to him. His throat worked as he swallowed, and there was a tent in his perfectly pressed pants all of a sudden.

“You were saying I wouldn’t be late if I hurried and showered and put my clothes on.” Grasping his tie, I straightened it, though there was no need. I just did it to torment him.

“I could call in sick,” he offered, his hands landing on my hips and squeezing.

I pressed my forehead to his starched shirt, laughing at the both of us, already wanting to skip work so we could fuck like bunnies the rest of the day.

“I’ll go get a shower. You go cook me breakfast.”
