“For what?”

“You know what. For sending my dad over to congratulate me on the show.”

“I didn’t send him,” she protested. “Well, maybe, I nudged him. He said he was proud of you to your mother. So I butted in and gave him a little nudge.”

“What did you tell him?” I asked, grinning wide.

“I said, ‘Well, what are you waiting for? Armageddon? Go tell him.’ Then your mom laughed and said I was right.”

I squeezed her tighter as a rumble of laughter vibrated in my chest. “I bet she did.”

“I like your mom. She’s a no-nonsense woman.”

“She is. A lot like you.” I kissed her again. Softly this time. Sweetly. “Thank you again.”

“I’d like to be thankful for my multiple orgasms later on. Sooner rather than later. Please and thank you.”

“We should probably wait till the party ends.”

“Probably so.” Then she winced. “Ow.” She looked down and pulled out of my arms. “No, Gilbert!”

“Baaaa!”

“Bad boy!”

He was wearing his new red collar with a bell on it. My idea so we knew when he was breaking and entering on the porch.

“What did he do?”

“He nipped my thigh.” She rubbed at the pink spot right below the hem of her dress.

No skin was broken, though. Gilbert wanted attention.

“I completely empathize with Gilbert. I know what it’s like to want to bite your thighs and not be able to.”

She arched a brow at me. “Stop taking his side.”

“Betty!” Lily shouted as she peeked out onto the porch. “Your mom and Emma just got here. They’re looking for you.”

“Coming,” said Betty.

“Well, I think my dad was right,” I told her, pulling her back into my arms, hands squeezing at her waist.

“About what?”

“Thatisyour goat.”

“Maybe. Just don’t tell Gretchen.” She laughed, the sound falling through my body like summer rain, refreshing and necessary.

“We’ll need to get him a woman so he’ll stop trying to steal mine.”

She took my hand and walked ahead toward the door. “Not a good idea. Then we’d have a bunch of baby goats.”

“What’s so bad about that?” I stopped her in the kitchen and pulled her back to me, whispering into her hair, “Having babies sounds like a great plan to me.”

Her breath hitched, and she looked over her shoulder at me, blue eyes wide. “I’m not ready for babies right now, Bennett.”

“Of course not now.” I brushed my lips against her cheek. “But one day?”
