"Did we do it?" I asked.

Kane was still typing and clicking away to check more servers.

"I think we did it. It looks like we're in." I was bouncing in my chair.

"I think so too," Gavin said, looking shocked that he'd figured it out.

Kane finally lifted his hands from the keyboard and turned to me. "We're in."

"Yay!" We all jumped out of our seats and started hugging. It was like we'd just launched a shuttle at NASA. We laughed and shared awkward high-fives. Even the normally quiet Shadow and Locke came over to congratulate Kane and Gavin.

"I didn't think I could do it," Gavin said, belatedly admitting he was faking his confidence all along.

"Well, you did," I said, popping Gavin another high-five. "You guys did it. Now we're in. Kenny's back up and running! Can't wait to take him and Tommy down for good."

"Why do you mention Tommy?" Gavin asked.

"Oh, um, well, it turns out Tommy had something to do with my parents' death many years ago." My skin felt cold even mentioning it.

"He did? That old bastard that pulled a gun on you?"

I shivered as the image of Tommy's gun pointed at me flashed through my mind. "Yeah. I mean, he's an all around bad guy. He's worse than Kenny in my book, but Kenny is selling children so he's scum of the earth."

He turned to Magnum. "Did you know this?"

"Got it under control," Mag said coolly. His hands were tight on his biceps, and his muscles tensed in his neck. He looked angry, and I quickly realized he was not thrilled with our little celebration.

I took a step back from Gavin, but Mag was already on the move. He made it across the room in a few strides andgripped my upper arm. "I need to speak with mywifefor a moment."

His wife? Oh shoot. Oh yeah. He was clearly mad about something.

He guided me out to the elevator, and he was silent as we went up to his floor. He didn't say a word as we entered his apartment and he marched away from me.

"What's going on?"

He stopped and turned back, his lips pressed tightly together.

"Did I do something?" I asked.

"No," he finally spoke, but he was obviously lying because I could tell he was upset about something.

We stared at each other for a long time, but he didn't relax. "Is this about Gavin giving me a high-five?"

"No."

I couldn't read him at all, and the silent treatment triggered my defensiveness. Now, after we'd come so far, he clammed up? "Just tell me what it is so we can talk about it." I let my frustration show in my tone.

He didn't say a word.

"Okay. So. I'll take a guess."

He blinked and crossed his arms, his eyes stormy.

"Maybe you're scared because this is all happening too fast." I made a circle with my hand between him and me. "If you want to take a step back, I'm fine with that."

"A step back?"

"You said you surprised yourself when you said you loved me. I'm okay with slowing things down. No pressure. Whatever."
