Bebe gawked at him.

“Hope that’s okay?” he murmured.

“Are you serious? That’s amazing.”

He let out a breath.

“Thank you so much, Mr. Walker!” Hope threw her arms around him.

“Do you think you can call me Jay?”

She looked at Bebe, who gave a small nod. “Thanks, Jay.”

“My pleasure. I hope you’ll let me come with you.”

Her grin grew wider. “Definitely. Mama too.”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Bebe said.

“Wait until I tell my friends.” Hope threw her arms in the air. “Best birthday ever!”

Epilogue

Jahleel looked around Bebe’s home on Christmas Day. Her parents sat on the sofa, whispering to each other. Hope sat on the floor, happy with her new dolls. And his folks had actually come over to celebrate Christmas with Bebe and her folks as well. His father sat in the recliner while his mom was perched on his lap. Almost all of the presents had been distributed except the one burning a hole in his pocket.

He drew in a deep breath, then cleared his throat. “Um, excuse me. I think we forgot something.”

Hope looked at him and winked. He hid a smile, trying not to give anything away. But Hope knew what was about to happen after they’d talked at the ball last night.

“What?” Mrs. Willabee asked.

“I have one more present.” He looked at Bebe. “I almost forgot to give it to you.”

“What are you talking about? The emerald necklace you gave me is perfect.”

The 14k-gold halo pendant looked perfect around her neck, but that gift was just a warm-up. The one he really wanted to give came in a ring-sized box.

“What would you say if I told you that wasn’t your real gift?”

She bit her lip. “Then this is fake?”

“Not at all. It’s just that of all the jewelry you could possibly be wearing, a necklace isn’t what I’d pick for you.”

A cute blush warmed her cheeks. “Jay...” she whispered.

“Oh my goodness,” his mom exclaimed.

Jahleel grabbed his cane, then lowered himself onto his good knee. “Bebe Willabee, walking away from you twelve years ago was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And when I came back here, I quickly wanted to make up for lost time.” He reached for her hand. “I love you, Bebe, and I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you.” He paused, struggling with emotion. “Will you do me the honor of marrying me?”

“Oh, Jahleel.” She sniffled as tears spilled down her cheeks. “Yes. Of course I’ll marry you.”

Of course. The words resonated in his head as his heart filled to the brim. He loved that it was a no-braineryesfor her, because he’d been a nervous wreck talking to Hope about it and asking Mr. Willabee for his blessing.

Seeing the joy on Bebe’s face only increased the happiness he felt. His hands shook as he placed the ring on her finger. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and their lips met in a cumulation of their feelings. The kiss saidI love you, I can’t wait to be your wife, you’ve made me so happy.
