Jay nodded slowly, releasing a breath. He’d never thought to hear those words come out of Obadiah Walker’s mouth. “Thank you for saying that.”

His father stood. “I should’ve never kicked you out. You’ve done great things in your career, and I hope you’re a first ballot Hall of Famer.”

“Time will tell.”

“I understand you wanting to go back to Texas, but know you’ll always be welcome here.”

A lump formed in his throat. “I appreciate that. And, um.” He stood so he could look his father in the eye. “You’re always welcome to visit me in San Antonio. I have plenty of guest bedrooms ... Dad.”

His father blinked rapidly. Jahleel thought he saw a tear slide down his cheek, but the Reverend turned away before Jay could search any further. Instead, he raised a hand in acknowledgment and trudged down the hall.

What just happened?

Somehow, someway, he and his dad had just had a heart-to-heart that didn’t leave Jahleel feeling bitter but instead feeling like he’d received a Christmas miracle.

He grinned.Thank You, Lord. All praise andglory to You, all day and every day.

Winter vacation had officially started. Bebe smiled as she parked in front of her carport. Hope jumped out of the car, excitement on her face. She skipped to the front door.

“Can we make hot chocolate with marshmallows, Mama?”

“Sure, pumpkin.” She unlocked the door. “But go put your backpack up and change out of your school clothes first.”

Jay was supposed to come over so they could resume their holiday movie watching. Up tonight wereThe Polar ExpressandElf.

“Okay.” Hope skipped down the hall to her bedroom.

Bebe chuckled and set her bag on the kitchen counter. Her cell rang, and she shifted, pulling it out of her purse.Texas?Who did she know there?

“Hello?”

“May I speak to Lucille Gordon?”

She winced. “Speaking.”

“Ms. Gordon, this is Judy Simpson from the San Antonio Independent School District Human Resources Department. I’m calling regarding your application.”

Bebe’s stomach lurched as if a flock of geese had just taken off.

“You currently reside in Peachwood Bay, Georgia, correct?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Will you be in San Antonio over the holidays?”

“Uh, no.”

“Then would you be able to do an interview via a video call?”

“Yes. I’d be happy to.”

“Great. Would you be available Monday at two?”

She gulped. “I would.” Was this really happening? What were the odds of actually getting called for an interview for the first job she applied for?You mean theonlyjob you applied for.
