Malaysia

“Rise and shine, sleeping beauty.” A heavy hand swiped my ass.

For a split second I forgot I was sleeping in Ethan’s bed. I wondered what happened to him. He was hiding something.

“I will take a shower down the hall. You can take this bathroom. Everything you need is laid out on the counter.”

I yawned, sitting up on the left side of the bed. “Thank you.”

He disappeared.

My bare feet carried me across the warm white and pale grey marble floor. I glanced at the warmer dial on the wall. Pays to be a rich doctor. The spacious bathroom was a bit much for a single man. The white custom counter with double sinks was inviting. The massive marble tub to my right looked tranquil, so did the six-head marble shower. Shit, it felt good to relieve myself after our little drinking escapade last night. Sitting on the throne, I took in the beautiful bathroom again. I probably had a small window of time to brush my teeth, shower, and toss on yesterday’s clothes. After brushing my teeth, I hoped into the shower. The piping hot water was a welcome refresher against my chocolate brown skin.

Knock, knock.

I jumped.

“Malaysia, are you almost ready?”

“Yes, I will be right out.”

He halted the Bugatti outside my weathered brick building. The snowy streets were littered with trash. I didn’t live in the nice part of town like Ethan. Even though I only had a short walk to the front door, I flipped up my coat collar to shield me from the cold. The gray skies warned snow was coming. Good thing I was off work today.

“Have a good day at work.” I smirked, reaching for the door handle.

“Wait, Malaysia.”

I turned, staring into his stormy blue eyes. His blond hair was perfectly curled all over his head. His face was clean shaven today. Ethan’s handsome exterior would make any woman drop her panties. “Yes?”

He draped his arm over the steering wheel. “I’m off work tomorrow. I was wondering if we could hook up?” He smiled, revealing his sexy dimples.

“Yes, we can hook up. What time did you have in mind?”

“Five in the evening. I’ll pick you up.”

“Sounds good. That way I’ll return home at a decent hour. I’d like to get enough sleep so I’m refreshed for work Monday.”

“I understand.”

In my peripheral, I caught a glimpse of a few men wandering around Ethan’s car. “In the future whenever we want to hook up with each other, we will text #OH, a time, and the date of when we want to meet. We should probably meet at your place or a hotel. It’s not safe here. Especially in this car.”

His eyebrows wrinkled. “I can handle myself.”

“Ethan…Besides, my apartment is basic. It’s not the kind of place for a man of your stature.”

He laughed. “Malaysia, I know how to protect myself.”

I folded my arms, glancing at the glove box. “Yeah, I bet you do.”

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow. Bring clothes for work. I’ll have a car service drop you off at work. And for the record if I ever spend the night at your place, I won’t drive this car. Does that make you feel better?”

I closed my eyes, then exhaled. “Yes.” I smiled, gazing into his eyes. “I feel better. Now get out of here before you get carjacked.” I hopped out of the car, not looking back.

Once inside my drab, bare apartment, I ran myself a hot bath, undressed, then submerged my body into the soapy water. Staring out into space, I recalled my life.

After graduating from University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, I was offered a job at a popular marketing firm in Los Angeles. I was living my dream. I had the nice apartment and nice car. My life was on track. Then I received a life-changing call from my mother. She said my father was losing his auto repair shop. He owned that shop for fifteen years. My mother begged me to do something. My brother was sixteen. There wasn’t anything he could do the legal way. I told my mother I’d take care of it.
