I was going to answer, that yes, the man had been very busy when I’d arrived, but a masculine chuckle and a large hand removed the phone from my ear.

“Hello, Mom.”

I glanced over and up at him. Hearing him call my mom, ‘mom’, was unsettling on several levels. His mouth sounded a bit full, and when I glanced at the kitchen counter, I spotted the plate with the left-over crumbs.

Connor had always liked baked apple anything, and this had not changed over the last ten years apparently. His green eyes brightened as he charmed my mother over the phone.

“Yes, yes, I wasn’t busy,”he said, giving me a smoldering look, one that not only hinted at what he was currently lying about, but also hinting that he may wish to repeat what we’d just done.

I didn’t bother to respond. Instead, I left his side to go get my own piece of pie. Yeah, it was something that even unemotional woman like me liked to eat.

Wearing my clean clothes, I washed the now empty pie pan. Connor watched me.

Honestly, I felt a bit self-conscious as I set the pan aside and wiped my hands on the towel at the sink.

“What’s your number, Pig?” He asked abruptly.

My hands stilled. Half-turning, I looked at him with amusement. “Pigs don’t have numbers, Connor.”

He frowned at my smart rebuttal. “Do you think you’re funny?”

Instead of answering, I walked out of the kitchen over to the couch to grab my purse and jacket. “My mother says there will be a rehearsal dinner next week, and the color of choice is soft greys and black.” I smiled. “Don’t be late.”

Making my way to the door, I didn’t expect my arm grabbed nor the near sincerity in his voice.

“Toya!” Surprised by hearing my name from his lips, I looked at him. He frowned loosening his hold of my arm. “Please, give me your number.”

The silence grew. I had to say I was shocked that he even knew the word ‘please’, and my number wasn’t something he couldn’t find out if he wanted to.

He cursed, snatching my coat from my hand. Digging in the pocket there, he took out my phone. Lifting it to my face, he barked a single order. “Code.”

Without thinking, I told him, and he quickly unlocked my phone and called his own. Hanging up, he shoved my phone back into the pocket of my jacket and held it out to me. “Here, when I call, you come.”

I blinked at that, taking my phone from him. “Bye.” With that, I turned back around and left his apartment. Entering the elevator, I chuckled at first before I found myself full belly laughing.

This game was so much fun, he’d actually pleaded for my number. Quieting my laughter, I pulled my phone out, seeing his number, and went to save it under the name, ‘Nit-Wit’.
