She didn’t mention to her father that she was pretty sure that she found her place of happiness right here in One-stop, Colorado. She wasn’t ready to share her growing relationship with anyone yet. She wasn’t ready to share Buck with the world.

Her father sighed. “Fine--fine. I get what you’re saying. You can’t fault me for wanting my baby girl close. I just worry about you traveling around all alone. Lord knows what will happen to you.”

“Well hey let me tell you how the other night I almost took out alien abduction with my baseball bat.”

“What?” Jeffery exclaimed in astonishment.

Karma proceeded to tell her father about how she woke up and encountered Buck thinking he was an alien trying to abduct her. They had a good laugh together. By the time Karma ended the call with her father she was in a lot better mood than she was when it had started. She always had a great relationship with her father even though she didn’t always agree with what he said, and didn’t always do what he wanted her to do. He complained it was her mother’s fault, that Amelia Martin gave Karma her rebellious genes.

He never admitted that Karma was a female version of him.

She looked out over the forest that surrounded her little cabin. It amazed her that just a few feet away was a little town. The sounds of traffic didn’t travel as far in the forest like it did in the city where the sounds of her neighbors fighting could be heard as close as her living room.

“Damn,” the sound of a phone ringing reached her ears.

Since she was holding hers, it must be Buck’s. She entered the cabin to see him pulling his phone out of his jeans where she had stacked them on the floor next to the bed. He scrubbed a hand down his face in an attempt to wake up. He smiled up at her as he blinked several times before answering the phone.

“Raleigh.” He sat there silently as the person on the other end spoke. “Fuck. Are you kidding me?” He stood up, holding the phone between his shoulders and his ear as he started to dress.

“Okay, can you text me the information? I will be there in a few hours.” He listened for a few more minutes as the person continued to speak. “Yeah, I am sorry too. Thanks for contacting me.” He put the phone in his back pocket before pulling his shirt over his head.

“Hey Beautiful,” he walked over to Karma, pulling her into his arms and hugging her tightly.

Karma hugged him back. She wasn’t sure what was going on, but something about that phone call had affected Buck.

The darkness was back in his eyes. Gone was the guy she had spent the last few days making love with — the one she shared her hopes for the future and what she was hoping to discover on her trip around the U.S.

She and Buck had spent all their free time learning about each other and becoming friends. Much to her surprise, being from an independent life, she loved to spend time with him. Now that guy was gone. The one who shared his dreams about Raleigh Valley with her. The one who laughed so hard that tears were running down as they shared childhood story. No this was the stranger with the sad eyes that she first encountered on that lonely stretch of highway.

After a few moments of him quietly hugging her, he leaned back and looked down at her. There, she saw him again, not just the darkness. Karma was glad to that her friend hadn’t completely vanished. He just retreated for a few minutes to regroup and now was making a return.

“Is there something that I can help you with?” she offered. In a short amount of time, Buck had become important to her.

“You’re helping me just by letting me hold you.” He pulled her back into his arms. “I wish we could stay like this forever,” he whispered before he released her.

“What is stopping us?”

“Life,” his voice contained a note of tiredness. Not the tired of going without sleep, but the tired that comes from life constantly beating you down in the ground.

“Life is for living.”

He stood looking at her. “You are right.” He agreed. “Life is for living. I have to take care of something. I will be gone for a couple of days.”

Karma wanted to question him about where he was going, but it didn’t feel right to intrude on his privacy. She was going to have to be patient when he was ready, he would tell her.

“I will miss you. Feel free to text me as often as you want or need.” She offered. They had exchanged phone numbers on their way back from Lake Raleigh.

“I will.” Buck gave her a gentle kiss on the lips. “That is for being so sweet.”

Karma laughed loudly when he swept her up into his arms. Her legs going around his waist to anchor herself. Buck’s tongue thrust into her mouth.

Stroking every corner of it.

Imprinting himself further on her senses.

She grabbed a handful of his hair, kissing him just as ferociously back. He wasn’t going away from her without her being embedded deep in his soul.

They broke apart. Gasping at each other as once again their passions flared high and hot.

“That’s so you don’t forget me.” He slid her down his body so she could feel the hardness of his cock as he set her on the floor.

He walked past her heading for the door. He paused long enough to slap her on the ass. “Have that sexiness waiting for me when I get back. You belong to me.” He ordered before he walked out the door.

Karma just watched the door shut slowly behind him. Stunned at his goodbye.
