I chortled,
“Yeah, Harley, I’m gettin’ what you’re puttin’ down playa.” Memories flooded in my head at how those words were what we said to each other when we officially became friends and I no longer kicked him in the balls.
It was that one summer, the night of my 12th birthday when he came over and realized that my daddy was at work and mama had left on a vacation taking Essy with her. She said I didn’t deserve to come with her because I told Essy that she looked stupid when she flipped her hair and fluttered her eyelashes at Dominic. He was a stupid boy, and no one should do that but that night, I never thought he was a stupid boy as he snuck into my room from the open window. He stumbled into my room still adjusting to his new height that seemed to spring in overnight. He was 14 and about the height of my dad at five feet and eight inches while I was still being mistaken for a nine-year-old with my height.
“What’cha doin ugly?” He asked.
“I’m sleepin’ Harley. Now go away before I kick you in the balls again.” I only called him Harley. I don’t know why I did.
‘Don’t look at me that way and I knew you weren’ sleepin’ cause I been out your windo’ hearin’ you cryin’ up a damn storm.”
“You’re not allowed to say those words. I’m telling Ms. Bella.”
He gasped and came to my bed turning me around so violently I almost bounced off my bed but when I faced him, he stopped cold.
“Monroe…” He called my name out. That was the first time he had ever used it.
I didn’t say anything as his looked at my face which was probably full of tears now and I couldn’t help it as more tears escaped my eyes. I expected him to call me ugly, but he did the opposite. He removed his shoes and got in the bed with me. He pulled me into him and forced my face into his chest.
“Wha- “I began to protest but he cut me off.
“Shh… When mama cries sometimes, I hold her like this until she feels better and that’s what I’m doing.”
I sniffled.
“You don’t gotta. I’ll be okay.”
He sighed ignoring what I was saying and still held my head on his chest until I relaxed into him.
“What’s wrong Roe?”
“Mama took Essy to Disneyland and said I couldn’ go.” I sobbed this time, louder than I was doing before.
“Shh... it’s okay Roe, it’s okay. Tell you what?” He said over my sobbing as he rubbed my back. “When you’re feelin’ like how you’re feelin’ right now, sneak into my bed and stay there until I get back from wherever.”
“What if you’re sleepin’?” I stopped crying to ask.
He shrugged.
“Then we’ll share my bed. You gettin’ what I’m puttin’ down?”
I smiled through my tears as I nodded.
“Yeah, I’m gettin’ what you’re puttin’ down playa.”
He chuckled.
“Also, Roe, no more kickin me in the balls. I can only take so much of that before I become deformed and you’re gonna have to be the one to marry me.”
“Oh God. No way, okay I’ll stop.”
I laughed this time and then we fell into a peaceful silence and after awhile I was drawing near sleep. While, Dom thought I was asleep, I wasn’t as I heard him say stuff.
“You’re so beautiful when you cry Roe. One day, one day I am going to make you realize that you were born for me. You don’t know it yet because you’re too young to understand it well I am too, but I still know. I know that I am always going to be in your life for good. You are going to be my wife one day.”
I kept still and quiet so that he didn’t know that I heard everything, and he held me til’ I slept. In the morning, he was nowhere to be found but after when I went to bed that night while Daddy, who I knew was trying his best as he had to work nights wasn’t there, I felt alone again because my mama still wasn’t back. I snuck out my window walking the little three steps distance it took to get to his window. It was open, I snuck in but didn’t see him in his bed, so I climbed in. Not too long after, he came into his room and he saw me there. He didn’t say anything as he sighed and walked over to his bed, climbing in with me pulling me close to him.
“Goodnigh’ Roe.”
