Dominic

I looked at Monroe as she rested on my chest. Damn! I needed to check myself because here I was with her letting her pass out on me in the bathtub. The water was now cold but that didn’t seem to bother her. She was so comfortable. I looked down at her face, I missed the hell out of this girl and to think for years, I thought she hated me but here we are confirming that someone, more specifically her family sabotaged our family. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but I’ll figure it out. As much as I wanted to let her rest in here, I could be much more comfortable, so I did what any other hot-blooded male would do. I kissed her forehead then the side of her cheek going down to her neck, but the blood curling screams she let out as she thrashed trying to fight the hold she was in, shook me.

“Roe! Roe!” I yelled out trying to stop her from screaming and thrashing all over the place.

“Please...Please, don’t hurt me. I’ll move out of your spot. Please.” She begged.

None of this made sense and I didn’t know what to do for a moment but then I physically shook her yelling her name even louder.

“MONROE! Wake up!”

She woke up with a jolt. She blinked a couple of times checking out her surroundings. She started to calm down, her body shivering from both the cold water and whatever just brought her to that dream state she was in.

I acted quickly as I stood up stepping out of the Bear-claw bathtub then I leaned

down scooping her up into my arms. I didn’t care that we were both dripping wet, I just needed her to get warm and stop shivering.

“Dom...” She called out to me as she wrapped her arms around me.

She held me so tight bringing back memories of when she would cry about something her mother said to her that made her sad.

“Shhh... It’s okay Roe. I’m here.” I reassured her as I stepped out of my en-suite bathroom and into my master bedroom.

As I placed her on my bed, she still kept her arms around my neck like she used to. She didn’t want to let me go and I shut my eyes praying that she had not gone through what I think she did. I sighed and laid down with her on my California king sized bed. I thought about how much space there was, yet she didn’t move from me as I held her thinking of when I first cuddled her, this time I knew I was never going to walk away. Her breathing became regulated and I needed to know,

“Roe, please talk to me. I ne-, no just tell me you’re okay?” My voice coming out rougher than I wanted it to be.

She nodded.

“I’m okay.”

“Don’t lie to me Roe, please don’t.”

She sighed this time, cuddling even closer than she already was. She placed her short leg over mine like she used to do when we’d end up falling asleep in the same bed. Something that makes me realize, I have loved her since the first time I saw her when we became neighbours. I had told her she was the ugliest little girl I’d ever seen, and it was all because she was missing her two front teeth.

“You’re funny looking,” I said on account of her hair that was loose and everywhere on her tiny little head.

She scrunched her nose up as she looked at me funny.

“You have nice eyes. Very brown.” She shrugged in her little yellow t-shirt and shorts ensemble with her white sneakers.

“Mama says they’re whiskey colored.”

“What’s whithkey?” Her missing front teeth made it hard for her to pronounce certain words at the time.

I snickered noticing her missing two front teeth.

“You’re ugly.”

She narrowed her eyes at me and flipped me the bird.

“I heard you’re supposed to do that when someone says something you don’t like.” She put her hand on her hip like my mama and it made me smile.

“Wanna be friends?”

“Why?” She asked me, suspicious.
