“I want a do-over!” Mouse insisted.

“Well, you can’t have one, and that’s that,” Grant refused.

Mouse gestured to the thunder that was parked nearby at the edge of the tract. “Then who’s going to drive it tonight?”

“I will,” Chase spoke up.

Grant shook his head. “This race is too important for your careful driving.”

“My ‘careful driving’ got us this far,” Chase countered.

Grant stabbed a finger at himself. “It was my speed that got us into the final rounds, and I don’t want you two bungling that up.”

“And I won’t have either of you crashing it in your recklessness,” Chase insisted.

“I will drive it.”

The offer cut through the conversation and forced all of our attentions to Ben. He was the speaker, and my heart skipped a beat at the thought of him out there in one of those fast races.

“You sure you want to do that?” Mouse asked him.

“Is there a problem with my driving tonight?” Ben wondered.

Grant shrugged. “Well, it’s just you haven’t been on a tract in a few years.”

Ben smiled as he gestured to me. “Millie here would say our drive through the city was a more pressing tract than this one.”

I shook off my shock and balled my hands into quivering fists at my sides. “What the hell are you talking about? You can’t go out there!”

He set his hand atop mine and smiled down at me. “This will help prove to my mother that there is nothing to fear from my driving a thunder.”

“Or get you killed!” I snapped.

Ben’s eyes met mine, and their calm depths soothed most of my worry. Most, but not all. “Did my driving in Validen not prove that I still have my skills.”

I snorted. “If you mean being able to scare the shit out of me, then yes, your skills are just fine.”

He chuckled before he leaned down and pressed a light kiss to my forehead. A warm blush accented my cheeks as he pulled away. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Damn you.”

He inclined his head. “I hope not.”

And with that he took up the helmet that Grant held and sauntered over to the thunder. I felt so helpless as he climbed into the vehicle and gave us all a wide smile before the engine roared to life.

I couldn’t take my eyes off him as he spun in a tight circle and sped away down the tract. “How good of a driver was he when he drove in the races?”

Grant stepped up to my side and watched Ben move over to the start line in front of the arena entrance. “One of the best. Maybe even better than me.”

Chase moved up to my side and scoffed. “He didn’t ruin the thunders half as much as you did with all your banging about on the course.”

Mouse joined us on Chase’s other side and nodded. “You have been pretty careless with the bodywork.”

I turned my head to and fro. “Why are you guys not standing beside Grant?”

“Well, it’s a lot safer saying that stuff about him over here than saying it standing beside him,” Mouse pointed out.

I cracked a smile, but the roar of more thunder engines made me jump. It also made my heart jump, especially when more of the vehicles lined up at the starting gate.

“Better get ready,” Grant commanded his cohorts. “Show’s about to start.”
