She’d been saying those same words over the years every time she detached from reality. Moments of her being lucid were rare, and it was getting harder to catch her in those moments.

“It’s okay. No one will take her,” said Oberon as he comforted Mom and led her away.

“Dad, please,” I said, turning to Benjamin. “I’ll find my pack one day. Getting mated to a pack right now sounds like a horrible idea.”

He suddenly stood up from his chair and pushed his glasses up.

“You’ve been promised to the Crawford Pack, and that’sfinal,” he said sternly. “I suggest you get used to the idea and be ready for dinner tomorrow.”

“Dad,” I protested, but he held up his hand.

“This is for your safety, and it’s not bullshit like you say,” he said. “I want you to think about how disrespectful you’ve been, especially after everything I’ve done for you.”

He stalked out of the house, and I sank into the chair in shock. Quinton pulled up a chair beside me and wrapped an arm tightly around me as I sat there frozen for a full minute.

“He’s serious,” I said. “This might actually happen.”

“Unfortunately, yes,” said Quinton, wiping my tears with the back of his hand. “Sooner or later, you were going to be matched to a pack by Henry. It’s better that Benjamin vetted the pack for you first.”

I sniffled, taking deep breaths to calm down.

“How do you know the pack will treat me right?” I asked. “And I like Jasper. I don’t like anyone else.”

“Jasper isn’t for you,” said Quinton, the only father I trusted with this information. “When an omega goes into heat…”

“I know,” I said quickly, cutting him off. I didn’t need the heat talk from him. An omega needed multiple males to satisfy her when she went into heat. She would be knotted repeatedly by multiple alphas until the day her heat was over and she was successfully impregnated.

Being with a loner alpha like Jasper would be a death sentence for me. But I would rather die than be stuck with a pack of alphas I hated.

“Are you all set for dinner tonight?”

“Yes, what’s your daughter’s name again?” I drawled, holding the phone to my ear as I leaned back lazily in the office chair at my construction site.

“Ruby,” sighed Benjamin in disappointment.

“I’m only joking,” I said, trying to reassure the omega’s frantic father over the phone.

He’d done everything to ensure his daughter would be mated to a decent pack. I remembered the day like it was only yesterday when my construction business was struggling, and he had come into my small falling-apart office.

“Do you need help getting your business off the ground?” asked Benjamin, taking a look around my small office and the massive paperwork on my desk.

“Yeah, but what’s your price?” I asked. “Everything comes with a price. I’m not stupid.”

Benjamin laughed, “You’ll marry my daughter five years from now.”

“What?”

“She’s an omega, and she will need a pack when she gets older,”said Benjamin. “I’ll help you get your business off the ground, and in a few years, you’ll have a guaranteed omega for your pack.”

I thought about that for a moment. I had never found love in my entire life, and I never believed in it.

“Yeah, sure,” I said without emotion. I was going to get an omega and a successful business at that. “Sounds like a deal to me.”

“I really hopeto moons you’re joking,” growled Benjamin threateningly. “My daughter is already giving me flack for setting her up, so I hope you’ll prove to be the alpha that I think you are.”
