She was an interesting one, and I wanted to learn more about her.

“I wonder if she even likes us,” said Davy, anxiously running a hand through his hair. I knew he was going to have attachment issues with her, especially if she decided she didn’t like us.

“Even if she doesn’t, you move on,” grunted Rufus, who sat back stoically in his chair. I could tell he had combed his beard until it shone to impress Ruby.

We were all secretly on edge, wondering if this was for real.

“She’s been promised to us,” I said. “Nothing should go wrong.”

The driver parked the car in the driveway after passing through the security gate. My heart thumped in my chest as I walked to the door. The thought of seeing her again made an odd flutter of excitement rise within me. I had never felt that way before, but she was a fiery, exciting omega who challenged me.

The door burst open before we could ring the doorbell.

“Wayne,” her father barked.

“Yes, what is it, Ben?” I said, tired of his short temper. To be honest, I wondered how his own daughter put up with him all these years.

“She’s not here,” he said, and I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion.

“What?”

“Ruby,” he explained. “Your intended wife ran away with another alpha.”

My hackles rose as fury overwhelmed me. My wolf raged to shift and break the alpha who took her. I wanted to find him and rip him to pieces.

“How do you know he didn’t take her?”

“She always liked him,” her father sighed. “I need you to find her and mate her before he does.”

“If she doesn’t like us,” I said slowly. “Then why would I chase an omega who doesn’t desire me? She clearly dislikes me and my pack.”

“It’s not safe for her. I really need you to find her,” said Benjamin.

“Please elaborate because nothing of what you’re saying is making sense,” I said, my jaw clenching. “There’s nothing I can do if she doesn’t like us. We can just move on.”

I never believed in true love and never saw it. Foolishness had taken over me to think that maybe I had found my person.

“You might as well come inside,” said Benjamin, looking left and right. “I will tell you the whole story.”

After Benjamin had explainedthe pact he had made with Henry to have his daughter mate with Marrok, I was stunned.

“How could I take another alpha’s intended mate?” I shouted at him. “Don’t you have any idea of the type of punishment Henry could inflict? He could ruin us completely because we took away his future daughter-in-law.”

“I know that,” said Benjamin, with sweat pouring down his forehead. “But if you act like you didn’t know, then you’ll be fine. Marrok is a fucking psychopath and can’t be trusted with my daughter. If you mark her first before her twenty-third birthday, she’ll be safe at least from him.”

I knew deep down that Henry wouldn’t care about that. Omegas were treated like property here, and he wouldn’t hesitate to take her from me.

“I will try,” I said. “But if she refuses me completely, I cannot force her.”

“Thank you, Wayne.”

“Show me to her room,” I said.

“Why?”

“I need her scent so we can find her.”

“Oh yes, of course,” said her father, his eyes wide as he led me up the grand staircase and into her elegant room. Her room was cute and organized. But I was taken aback by the picture of the motorcycle on her wall, and I wondered if she had a passion for vehicles. “I’ll leave you to it.”
