“Her laugh is so cute,” said Chad.

“I know, right,” said Ruston, turning to me. “Tell us what your family is like. If you don’t mind sharing.”

Yes, I minded.

Talking about myself was the most dangerous thing, and these alphas would be able to sniff out holes in my stories a mile away.

Chapter Thirteen

BREANNA

“Ilive with my aunt,” I said vaguely.

“Yes, you told us that already,” said Ruston. “But I would like to know a little bit more about you.”

“She’s quite the mystery,” said Chad.

“I know, I don’t mean to come off like that,” I said, laughing nervously. “I just don’t like to talk about my family much. My dad wasn’t a nice man at all, and I prefer not talking about it.”

“Oh fuck, I’m sorry,” said Ruston, squeezing my hand. “If I ever meet your father…”

“When did you start living with your aunt?” asked Chad.

“When I was fifteen,” I said. “Never looked back.”

There, that was a nice and simple explanation.

Until...

“What’s your aunt’s name?” asked Chad curiously. Immediately, my heart started pounding harder with fear. If I gave her real name, they’d probably know right away that she was an omega.

“Therese,” I lied in a casual tone. I started to wonder in panic if they looked into me since they knew my real name. But no one cared about humans, so I was safe. “The water is beautiful, but I’d like to sit down for a moment.”

“It sure is beautiful,” said Ruston as we walked to the enormous towel laid out on the sandy earth.

I laid on my back and crossed my hands underneath my head, and they both lay on either side of me.

“The ocean reminds me of home,” said Chad.

“Oh,” I said, not sure if I should probe more, but I was curious why they were here and not at the Alpha Compound. I was surprised to see an alpha pack out on their own. They usually stayed together as a giant pack even though there were individual packs in the hierarchy, so I wondered why they’d leave Henry’s rule. “Have you lived here your entire life?”

“No, I used to live on an island,” Chad sighed.

“Oh, cool.”

He was probably talking about Howl’s Edge Island, and I didn’t pry further. I didn’t want to bring too much attention to myself. Ruston grabbed my hand while Chad got up, muttering about getting drinks for us, and he left.

“What you said about your father bothers me,” he said.

“I know, I shouldn’t have said it,” I said.

“I’m glad you told me. Never hold these things to yourself. I never had a great relationship with my own father,” said Ruston, his eye on the blue ocean as he talked. “My drive to build apps and design them came from my childhood. My dad would hate whenever I got my hands on a new computer. One day, he threw out all my tech and demanded I get a real job. Ever since that day, I left and never went back.”

“Wow, I’m sorry,” I said, squeezing his large hand.

“It’s okay,” he said. He rolled onto his side and looked at me with his elbow propped up.

“It made you who you are today.”
