“And if you kill her,” started Lio as he stood on my other side protectively. He had shifted back into alpha form. “You know the deal.”

One by one, all the vampires stood next to James surrounding us. Still in their werewolf forms, Grant and Jatix’s pack prowled at the bottom of the platform in front of us.

“We can’t keep killing each other,” said Armon. Then he looked at James. “You are holding the necklace from your dead leader. Now that you are the new leader, will the feedings stop? Or are you still going to prey on my people?”

James clutched my hand tightly. “It will stop. As the new leader of my people, I will make sure no one feeds on your people in any capacity. I have fed on only animals for years, and I will have my people do the same.”

I could see theHowl’s Dailynews reporters getting closer, taking videos and pictures of us. We stood there while King Armon drew up a contract with his advisor, and I watched as James signed the contract in his blood.

“From this day forward, the vampires will live in peace amongst the people of Howl’s Edge,” announced Armon. “No one is to start a war with one another, and we will have to learn to coexist and live in peace.”

Relief coursed through me while he spoke. News reporters harassed the king with questions, and the crowd burst into conversation as they stared at the vampires in fear and disgust. They would need to get used to it. I know I did. And I ended up in love with one of them.

I turned to James, smiling, and he was also smiling through his exhaustion.

“I love you,” he said to me, his eyes searching my face.

“I was going to say it first,” I whined, and he chuckled, pulling me in for another kiss right in front of Lio. After the kiss, I pulled away and turned to Lio next. “I love you too, Lio.”

“Don’t forget you’re mine too,” he grunted, also kissing me hard on the lips. I felt Markus’s hands roam on my back, and I turned, kissing him last to the wolf whistles and jeers of the people.

I had freely announced my love with my kisses. And I didn’t care who saw as long we didn’t get killed for it.

Chapter 29

James

Volgriff’sbodywasheavyin my arms as I walked to my people’s village for the burial.

My heart was heavy, and I couldn’t look at his lifeless face. The funeral tonight was going to take a hard toll on me. Alana walked beside me along with her two alphas. The vampires who had come to my rescue walked in front and behind us for protection, holding bows and arrows. I was shocked that Volgriff had come out of hiding to save me, but I knew he was looking for any excuse for revenge against the government. I thought he despised me for what I had done. There was a love-hate relationship between us. He took care of me like a father would after my family was killed.

“Are we going back to your village?” Alana asked me, looking up at me with her beautiful wide eyes. Her long eyelashes fluttered as she gazed at me with concern.

“I would prefer you stay in the safety of your city,” I grunted. Sweat trickled down the back of my neck from the long walk to the cave. We were getting nearer, and I was worried about what my people would say once they saw her.

“No, I’m coming with you,” she said, looking straight ahead. “Please don’t tell me to leave you again.”

Her alpha glanced at me with disapproval in his eyes, but at least it wasn’t in ultimate hate this time.

“Are you the leader of the pack? I’m not sure how all this works,” I asked him.

“Yes, my name’s Lio,” he said, introducing himself and about to shake my hand but held back when his eyes landed on the dead body in my arms. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

“He was like a father to me,” I said gruffly. I was wary about divulging too much information with an alpha who shared my omega’s heart.

“Oh hell, that’s tough,” said Lio, shaking his head as he looked straight ahead. “I can’t even imagine.”

I nodded, not saying anything else. I didn’t trust myself speaking in case I broke down, showing weakness in front of her alphas.

“It’s odd she’s in love with you too,” said the second alpha, who looked much older than Lio. “I’m Markus, by the way. Pleased to make your acquaintance in battle.”

“Markus, he just lost somebody close to him,” said Alana, who gripping his hand.

“Sorry man,” said Markus, glancing at Volgriff’s body.

“It’s fine,” I said shortly, and the alphas finally stopped trying to make conversation with me. I wasn’t in the mood right now. “You all don’t need to come with me to the funeral.”

“Wherever Alana goes, we go,” said Lio. “Without question.”
