“You don’t have to like it,” he says matter-of-factly. “it’s the way it is. Now tell me about your day.”

I go into the boring details of my day, feeling like for once we are actually having a normal conversation. Like this is what people do in regular relationships. They talk about the mundane shit that went on in their days and the other person is actually sober enough to pay attention and give a shit. Killian doesn’t go much into detail about his day, but he at least opens up to me a little bit.

“I’m sorry that I didn’t come by to see you,” I tell him, meaning every word that I speak. “If we’re going to fly under the radar, I can’t come by every day. We have to be smart about this, okay?”

I wait for his rebuttal but instead he simply sighs. “Okay. I get it, I really do and I know sometimes I can be really fucking difficult. But okay. I’ll follow your lead on this.”

He takes me by surprise and a smile forms on my lips as I roll over onto my side, holding the phone against my ear. Killian’s right, he is difficult, so this is a step. He’s actually making progress with his therapy sessions and it’s evident in how easily he submitted when usually he would put up a fight.

Maybe history won’t repeat itself. We’ve both grown so much in our time apart and now we’re growing together. The future doesn’t have to follow the same path as our past.

Together, we can pave a new road from the fragments of our shattered souls, molding them together as one.

Together, we are one soul. The only one that matters in this lifetime.

SIXTEEN

KILLIAN

It’s been a week since Ainsley brought the phone into my bedroom and I haven’t seen her since. She answers the phone every time I call, but she’s been avoiding me. I see through her bullshit excuses though. I know the real reason… she’s terrified.

I get it, I really do. I understand her fear because I feel it too. I know she has other reservations because she doesn’t want either of us to get caught, but that is the last thing that I’m worried about. I want Ainsley to feel safe and comfortable.

I need her to trust me with her heart again.

Lying on my back, I stare up at the stark white ceiling above me. My eyes trace invisible patterns as I listen to the hands on the clock on the wall tick. I’ve been giving Ainsley time and space. I don’t call her every day, even though I fucking want to. And I don’t call her the minute that she gets off work.

I wait until the moon hangs high in the night sky. Until she’s tucked away in her bed for the night.

A soft knock sounds on my bedroom door. I don’t bother getting up, calling out that they can come in. In a facility like this, even though they try to give you your privacy, you never know when someone is going to stop by your room. Sometimes, it’s even just to do a quick check in and make sure everything is alright.

As badly as I want to get out of here, it’s a fuck of a lot better in here than it is out in the real world.

Closing my eyes, I lay motionless in bed, listening as the door softly closes again. I don’t bother moving, figuring that whoever opened my door must have walked into the wrong room. Since I didn’t acknowledge them, they probably thought that I was asleep and didn’t feel the need to announce that they came into the wrong room.

I feel unsettled, feeling like I’m not alone as I sense someone else’s presence in the room. Her footsteps are barely audible as she pads across the floor, moving closer to my head. Her warm scent touches my nose and my eyelids flutter, opening as I see her standing above me at the side of my bed.

She stares down at me, her soft brown eyes touching the darkest, deepest parts in my soul. Neither of us say a word as I pull back my blankets and scoot over, giving her room as she slips into my bed. I wrap my arm around the back of her neck, pulling her toward me as she lays her arm across my chest, pressing her body flush against my side.

“Where have you been, baby girl?” I murmur against the top of her head as I inhale her scent. “I’ve fucking missed you.”

“I know,” she whispers, burying her face in my chest. “I just needed some space, some time to clear my head and get my thoughts straight. You have a way of clouding all of the thoughts in my head.”

“I was beginning to wonder if you weren’t ever going to come back to see me.”

Ainsley’s arm wraps tighter around my torso. “We’re getting a new admit tomorrow afternoon and we’re running out of beds. He’ll be rooming with you, so we can’t keep doing this. At least not right now.”

I groan inwardly, the irritation building. “Isn’t there another room he can stay in? Why the hell does it have to be mine? I don’t want to share my space with someone else.”

“There’s literally no other beds available. This is the last one and you know that we can’t turn anyone down, Killian,” Ainsley pauses, chewing on the inside of her cheek. “Everyone deserves a chance to get their shit together.”

“Fuck him,” I growl, knowing that I’m throwing an unnecessary temper tantrum but of course this would happen. Another fucking obstacle that is getting in the way of the two of us being together. “He can go somewhere else. Or put him up in one of the supply closets or some shit. I don’t fucking care what happens to him, as long as he’s not fucking up what we have.”

Ainsley shifts, rolling onto me, straddling my waist as she stares down at me. Her white-blonde hair hangs around her face as her eyes burn holes into mine. “No one is fucking up what we have. It’s not worth the risk, baby boy. We gotta play the long game. We won’t have to worry about this shit after we’re both completely out of treatment. Until then, we gotta lay low.”

I narrow my eyes at her, sliding my hands up her thighs, stopping at her hips as I grip them roughly. “So, why the fuck are you in my bed right now then?”

Her expression grows darker, her eyes glimmering with a sinister look as she peers down at me through her lashes. “Because I don’t know when we’ll be able to do this again. I’m taking advantage of the time that we have together tonight. If you want me to leave, just say the word and I’m gone, Killian.”
