I go to turn away, as I should have done from the beginning. As soon as she heard me out here, I should have sprinted to my car and got the fuck out of here. Hell, I never should have come here in the first place.

“Wait,” Ainsley calls out. “Meet me at the window beside the back door.”

I swallow roughly, watching her disappear into her room.

I should really leave.

My feet carry me around the back of the house, not stopping until I reach the window that she told me to come to. As I get to it, Ainsley slides it open, motioning for me to come in.

“I’m not coming in, Ainsley,” I whisper, shaking my head at her. This was a bad fucking idea.

“Yes, you are.” She stares at me, her brown eyes ice cold. “Hurry up before we wake up my mom.”

A sigh slips from my lips as I run my hand through my hair. I grab ahold of the windowsill, hoisting myself up as Ainsley takes a step back. As quietly as possible, I climb through the window and land with a soft thud on my feet in the kitchen. I open my mouth, but no words come out.

Ainsley stares up at me, her brown eyes searching mine as I stare back down at her. The past three weeks have felt like a lifetime, but time slowed down with her not around. Standing here with her so close that I could reach out and touch her is fucking with my head. I breathe in deeply, breathing in her scent as it wraps itself around me.

“Come on.” Ainsley motions for me to follow her as she disappears into the house. Her footsteps are quiet as she pads up the stairs in her bare feet. I shouldn’t follow her because I know exactly where she’s leading me.

And once I get her alone in her bedroom, I have no idea what the fuck is going to happen.

I’m already in her house. I already fucked up by coming here. I might as well finish whatever the hell it is that I started by her catching me.

I follow closely behind her, careful to make sure that I’m being quiet. The last thing that I need is Raina waking up and finding me here. I know that she doesn’t hate me, but I’m sure she isn’t my biggest fan right now. Especially after I fucked up her daughter’s life. Me being here wouldn’t exactly make her happy.

Ainsley disappears into her bedroom and I follow after her, softly closing her door shut behind me. She leans forward, brushing against my arm as she reaches out to lock the door. My skin burns from her touch.Fuck, I missed her so much.

“Why did you need to see me?” she asks, her voice quiet but demanding as she sits down on her bed. “It doesn’t make sense to me. You went behind my back and sent me away with my mom. You’re the one who didn’t want me anymore, but you’re spying on me?”

I hang my head in defeat, my shoulders slumping as I grip the back of my neck. “Because I needed to make sure that it was worth it.”

“That what was worth it?” she questions me, raising her voice slightly. “Stop speaking cryptically, Killian. You were creeping around outside my house. You owe me a fucking explanation.”

I stride over to her, pressing my palm against her mouth. “Shut the fuck up. Your mom can’t know that I’m here.”

Ainsley moves her lips against my palm, moving her mouth lower as she clamps down on the side of my hand with her teeth. I narrow my eyes at her as she bites down again for good measure before releasing me. Pulling my hand away, I inspect the crescent shapes imprinted in my skin.

“Explain yourself or I’ll make sure that she knows that you’re here.”

I lift my eyes away from my hand, staring down at Ainsley as she stares up at me expectantly. She’s expecting an explanation and I’m not sure that I should give it to her. If I’m honest with her, if I tell her the real reason, it could completely derail her from getting the help that she needs.

“I needed to see that you were good,” I tell her quietly as I give her half of the truth.

She narrows her brown eyes at me. “Bullshit. After everything we’ve been through, can’t you at least tell me the fucking truth for once? All it’s ever been is lies. The truth isn’t going to change the damage that’s already been done.”

“It is the truth.”

Ainsley shakes her head, rising to her feet as she stares me down with an icy gaze. “You needed to make sure that what was worth it?”

“I told you the truth.” My jaw tics. “Drop it, Ainsley.”

“Fuck that,” she growls, stepping into my space as she pushes her shoulders back.

I focus on the small flecks of gold in her irises, realizing that she isn’t clean. She’s done a good job trying to hide it and maintain her composure, but it’s impossible to miss the glossy look in her eyes. The way that they’re glazed over, with half of her here and the other half on another wavelength.

“You’re fucking high right now?” I grab her chin, tipping her head back as I stare directly into the darkest parts of her soul. Releasing her face, I roughly grab her wrist, pulling her arm up as I inspect her skin for track marks. When I don’t find any, I drop her arm and search her eyes. “Where are you hiding them?”

“I’m not hiding shit.” She narrows her eyes. “Go ahead, search my whole body. You’re not going to find track marks anywhere.”
