A body slams into mine and above my head a bullet whizzes by.

“Shit, ragazzaccia. You need to fucking listen to me.” Sansone’s hot breath bathes my ear.

“Sorry?”

“Not yet, you aren’t. Come on, we need to move before he circles back.” Sansone rises to a crouch and acts as a lookout while I rise.

We dash around empty desks, seeking what we hope is the last threat before we deal with Dusan. We sweep the floor together. As we near Dusan’s office, we pick up a new trail of blood. We follow it to the door Sansone attempted to open before the surprise attack. As we get in position, a shot splatters the guard’s head and his body drops in front of us. Mattia comes out in the open.

“I think he’s the last one, Boss.”

“Thanks, Mattia.” Sansone grabs his elbow in appreciation before returning his attention to our ultimate target.

Once the lock disengages, we shift to the side of the door and swing it open.

From inside, Dusan empties an entire clip. “You’ve made a big mistake targeting me.”

We wait until his gun clicks, and he has to reload before we swarm inside. All three of us aim guns at him, and he throws his gun at us then ducks under his desk.

“Dusan, there’s no place to hide,” Sansone says. “Your men are dead.”

This private office is less luxurious than I expected. With the security features, the only windows are the ones facing outside. The walls are shiny steel with wood inlays. Being on the fiftieth floor, there’s no escape for our quarry.

A humming precedes the electricity returning to the lights and all the other fixtures. I cock my head for other signs of life in case we missed another person like the surprise guard who almost took me and Sansone out.

“Surveillance will be up again soon,” Omari’s voice whispers in my ear. “In the meantime, I’ve locked the stairwell doors and deactivated the floor for the elevators. If Dusan is waiting forsomeone to come to his rescue, they’ll need a ram and a few strong men to break the doors.”

“Sansone, you don’t have to do this.” A thread of desperation underlies Dusan’s voice. “If you hand over the woman, we can call things even.”

“So you can kill her?”

“Not immediately. I need to know where my son is and the money he had. A loss like that isn’t one I can overlook, and she’s the only one who knows.”

Sansone winks a preemptive warning at me. “If she tells you where the money is, you’ll stop coming for her?”

“I’ll need the money first.”

Sansone and I exchange knowing glances. “That’s a big problem for me. Your son sold my daughter to a pedophile. Forgetting he deserved every goddamn thing he earned, I would never sacrifice the person who saved my little girl.”

“So we’re at an impasse?”

“Guys… the cameras are up, and you need to duck.” Omani’s panic causes us to move before he finishes speaking. “The reflection in the window shows me he’s got another gun under the desk.”

We head toward the seating area in the corner and flip the heavy wooden table over in time for Dusan’s shots to pepper the surface with bullets.

“Ragazzaccia, I’m going to have to disappoint you. Dusan won’t survive this place and won’t face your blades.” Sansone fires a shot in Dusan’s direction before ducking for cover again.

“I understand.” Although I do, I can’t help my pouting. My knives desire the blood of the man who dared to threaten my daughter.

We time Dusan’s next attack and get in position. The three of us aim at the area where he last shot. As soon as he pokes his head out, I empty my TRP, but like I told Sansone, I’m ashitty shot. None of my hits land. We duck again for the next opportunity.

When it comes, Mattia and Sansone light Dusan up. His body jerks and twitches as they fill his torso with lead. Not to be outdone, I select my favorite blade, aim, and launch it.

The tactical knife hits the mark in the center of his head. The momentum lifts and throws his body backward until he thuds against the glass wall, not moving. We round the table to stand above Dusan’s dead body. I pull the knife from his forehead to commemorate today’s accomplishment.

“Hey guys, his reinforcements are coming up the elevator. Right now would be a good time to leave. If you use the eastern staircase to the thirtieth floor, you’ll avoid getting into another firefight. The floor is empty.”

“Thanks, Omari. You’ve been a lifesaver.” Sansone grabs my elbow and pulls me toward the stairway.
