She drops her bear and runs to the middle of a group of one-half dozen minuet kittens. While she plays with them, another thought comes to mind. After a brief conversation with the breeder, I tell Jinx to choose which kitten she wants. Once she makes her choice, I tell her to select one as a gift for Zakiya. She makes her choice and I conclude my business with the breeder and agree to take delivery of the cats once they’re weaned.

Jinx is so happy, she skips for the first time in my presence. Not even my explanation of why she can’t bring the cats home today phases her. It makes me wonder if her mother gave her anything to take pleasure in as a kid. I chuckle. Most parents don’t want their kids to have an entitled attitude, and here I am, somewhat disappointed that my daughter doesn’t. Of course, my concern stems from her mistreatment at the hands of her egg donor. That’s the only way I can think of that woman without flying into a rage at Jinx’s mistreatment. Why had Zakiya deprived me of my vengeance?

And I know it was Zakiya and not some imaginary boss. After her slip about being a monster, I could only connect the hints she’s dropped to draw one conclusion. The future Mrs. DeLuca is perfect in every aspect, except her ability to keep a secret long term. I wonder what else she’ll let slip when she opens up to me. I’m excited to discover more about her and probably will continue to be until my dying breath.

On the way to Jinx’s tutor, I ask, “If you had your choice of houses, would you prefer to live in Zakiya’s house or mine?”

Jinx watches me with wariness, which makes me rethink how I worded the question.

“Regardless of the house, we’ll still live together as a family.”

Her caution disappears. My guess is correct. All she needs is reassurance that the people she has become attached to aren’t planning to leave her.

To no one’s surprise, she chooses Zakiya’s home. It’s my first choice, too. Despite equipping my homes with every amenity under the sun, they can’t beat Zakiya’s for warmth and a sense of welcome as soon as someone steps inside. I can’t wait to move in. Maybe she’ll grant me another fashion show. I’d spied lingerie in a corner and am tempted to see how lace and satin enhance her skin and shape.

We arrive at Jinx’s tutor. While I wait for her, I reach out to Jamal to check out his progress on the hacker and warehouse hit. My frustration on that end has no limit. There are no new leads. When I calm enough, I contact my household staff for my immediate move.

After the tutor’s, I pick up dinner and head home, more than eager to Zakiya again. Although today was supposed to be a busy workday, I don’t regret the time I spent with the important ladies in my life.

When we arrive at Zakiya’s place, the calm peacefulness I enjoyed seems more like a fever dream. There are four neighbors in a contest to speak over each other while talking at Zakiya. I’ve never seen her more frazzled. Although the wide-eyed expression and her inability to get in a word are adorable, I’d prefer to be the one putting that look on her face. Followed by other activities to leave her speechless.

Meanwhile, a cute Black woman pokes Aurelio with her finger while yelling at him in a corner. He maintains his professionalism, although the heated glare he aims at her is anything but. God, save us from feisty women. Or him. I glance at Zakiya. I definitely don’t want to be saved from her. I’d damn all my days to be with her. Even heaven itself would envy my joy.

Amid the adult chaos, other kids run around with toys in their hands, screaming and laughing as if living on a different plane in which the adults are akin to landmark obstacles rather than people.

Everything comes to a stop the second the woman berating Aurelio notices Jinx because she yells, “Jinx, save me from this brute!” The woman charges at my daughter, but Zakiya intercepts before the mad woman gets too close.

“Dory, what did I tell you about dialing your cray-cray down?”

The woman feigns a hurt expression. “Max! And my enthusiasm for seeing my surrogate daughter will not be denied. Now move aside.”

“I didn’t realize we were having a party. I would have brought more food,” I say.

“That’s not a problem. I assume people your age have a phone. Order something with all that cash you go wasting on those fancy clothes and car.” Mr. Murphy strikes again before also doing an awkward hop and walk over to Jinx.

“Keep watch.” I shove the food into Aurelio’s chest and steer Zakiya to an empty room where the din from the crowd in the front room is more manageable.

“You changed your clothes.” In the quiet, I look my fill, disappointed she’s back to her regular attire of baggy clothes that do nothing to enhance her shape. Nevertheless, I’m excited to see her, even if the last time was hours ago.

She peers down at her clothes. “Habit, I guess. I’m not comfortable lounging at home in dressier clothes.”

“How about taking that gown out for a spin to do it justice?” The idea pops into my head since Valentino mentioned the gala.

“Where?”

I had little reason to go to a business party before, but I’ll take an excuse to parade Zakiya on my arm and introduce people to my future wife. She deserves the protection of my name while she comes to terms with her fate.

“A new mogul has moved to Douglas and wants to make deals with local businesses.”

She snickers. “And you’re a local businessman?”

“Among other things. My resume is as wide and varied as I suspect yours is.” I pull her into my arms. “So, how about it? Go with me.”

Zakiya initially tries to pull away, but I hold fast and her resistance wanes. “A man shouldn’t bring a nanny as a date.”

“I don’t care what other men do with their nanny.”

She pokes me in my chest. “I’m talking about you.”
