Before Aurelio can respond, I ask, “Give us a minute.”

Once he leaves, I release Zakiya.

“What mind game are you playing? This morning you threatened me with punishments. Now you expect me to believe you…” she sputters without ending her thought.

“What? Want you? I do,” I say instead of telling her outright she already belongs to me.

Zakiya isn’t ready to hear the truth, but she’s about to get a crash course on belonging to a DeLuca.

“Not possible. You know nothing about me. I’m a danger magnet.”

“And I’ll be your buffer. More specifically, I’ll provide the buffer when I can’t be there.”

“Still won’t work.” Zakiya shakes her head. “I have a personal life and there’s no room for overlap with someone watching my every step.”

I frown at what she leaves unsaid. “Let’s get something clear, mia ragazzaccia, if you’d followed my rules from the start, I might have taken your objections under consideration.”

“So thisispunishment, and you’re full of shit for all that crap you told your boy. You know what…” Zakiya takes a deep breath. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll lose him like I lose the rest?—”

“Ragazzaccia, good luck losing him when you’re tied to a bed.”

The calm she attained disappears with my reminder, and she hauls her arm back to hit me.

I catch her hand with an eager smile. In truth, I expected this reaction earlier, but I’ll delight in what comes next.

Zakiya’s gaze bounces from my grin to the hand I hold prisoner. “Shit…” she whispers.

“Tell me no, mia ragazzaccia,” I grit, grabbing her nape and pulling her forward.

Her lids droop, and she stares at my lips. “This is a bad idea.” Zakiya licks her lips, enticing me to take what I’ve wanted since our first meeting.

“That’s not a no.”

“I’m Jinx’s nanny.”

“Still not a no.”

“I leave in a month.”

“Not if I have anything to say about it.”

She opens her mouth but nothing comes out because I’m done with our back and forth, and I take her lips, unleashing my hunger on her smooth flesh. Everything about her drives my need to taste and discover every nook and cranny of her mouth higher. A hint of spearmint from the candy she took at the school earlier enhances her natural flavor.

I groan in her mouth, hooked from one kiss.

The sound I make sparks something inside her because she becomes an active participant in the kiss, dueling with my tongue, matching my energy, attempting to dominate me.

I press into her, allowing her to feel what she does to me. Instead of shying away, she cradles my erection between her thighs, and I deepen the kiss. I’m not gentle, then again, neither is she. When we separate, my lips are tender and hers are swollen.

I dip my head because one kiss whets my appetite when I’ve been starved for too long.

Zakiya presses her fingers against my lips. “Your family…”

“They’ll understand.” I pull her hand away.

“They might, but Jinx won’t.” Zakiya walks out of my arms leaving an emptiness behind that is devastatingly bleak and novel. “She’s had so many new things thrown at her with little say. I’d rather we keep whatever this is between us just that… between us.”

The parameters she wants to put around our attraction and the deeper underlying compatibility between us is a non-starter. But her face is set, communicating her resolve without pushing until I agree.
