I have to agree. The table is long enough to seat fourteen and too ornate for a first dinner with a daughter he’s getting to know.

“Follow me.” Sansone leads us to a sunroom.

Inside there is a small table and four chairs to one side; perfect for informal dining albeit not as cozy as a breakfast nook. The room also boasts a lush sectional and activity area with puzzles and board games. On further inspection, everything is age appropriate for Jinx. With more signs of Sansone’s consideration, the desire to trust him with Jinx grows.

I nip it in the bud. This is how people who love-bomb operate, except in this instance he isn’t luring me with love and affection but Jinx’s needs and future wellbeing.

We sit to eat an awkward dinner filled with silence from all of us. When we finish, I take Jinx upstairs and show Sansone her bedtime routine.

I have to give him props. Not once did I have to remind Sansone not to touch Jinx before she’s ready.

Once Jinx closes her eyes, I tuck the blankets around her.

“We have things to discuss.” Sansone leads me to a sitting room on the second floor. “I understand you have rules for me to follow.”

“Yes. Firs?—”

“Are those prescribed?” He points to my sunglasses.

I touch the frame. “No?—”

“Good.” He snatches my glasses off my face. “I have rules, too. First is, you don’t wear shades under my roof.”

All the soft emotions steadily growing ever since he showed me Jinx’s room die a sudden death.

“Give them back.” I attempt to retrieve my stolen property, but he holds it over my head, and my arms are too short to grab the eyewear.

Sansone presses forward. I stand my ground for two seconds. Otherwise, he would walk through me. I glare at him, not appreciating his intimidation. Then I hear crackling and look toward his hands. My glasses are now broken shards crumbling to the floor.

Before I can retaliate, he grabs my chin and stares into my eyes. “Fuck!”

I frown at his outburst, confused by his reaction.

“You’re fired. You can’t be Jinx’s nanny.”

I pull my face free with a snicker. “You have no say since you don’t pay me.”

“I’m her father.”

“Not on paper. Remember, we haven’t tested her to confirm she’s yours.”

His nostrils flare at the reminder.

“And if you think I can’t leave here with her, you’re kidding yourself. Evading the tail you put on me was child’s play. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll admit you aren’t capable of finding a ghost, and that’s exactly what we’ll become.”

Sansone grabs me by the throat and slams me into the wall. His breath warms my face while rage darkens the blue of his eyes. “Your mistake is you don’t fear me.” His thumb circles the skin above my pulse where my heart beats at a steady thrum. “But if you insist on fulfilling this role, I’ll make sure you learn genuine terror.”

“Somethingyouneed to learn about me is you aren’t the first monster I’ve faced.” I pry his hand from around my neck. “And you should pray you don’t end up like the rest. Because the one thing they have in common is they aren’t standing. Now, do youwant to get serious and discuss Jinx’s needs, or do you want to test me?”

CHAPTER 8

Sansone

As hot water from the shower pounds on my head and shoulders, I replay Zakiya’s unveiling.

Fuck!

She haunts me in unguarded moments. A slight inconvenience before changes everything. Now, after getting an unobstructed view of her face, I’ll never rest. Not until she’s under me. And my need only grows knowing that the room I assigned her shares this bathroom. At any time, she could walk through the doors, catching me as I masturbate to her.
