“Where is Kenya?”

I scrunch myself into a smaller ball though there isn’t much room under Pedro’s desk to hide my big booty.

“Tell me what your business with her is.”

“I know she’s here. She barely touched her lunch.”

“Do you make it a habit of telling complete strangers the location of your friends?”

“I’m not… Fine, you win. What I have to talk about involves you as well.”

He’s not looking to confront me about waking up in my bed?

“I’m intrigued,” Pedro says.

“The committee chair position, I think you should make it a co-chair.”

“If this is your attempt to play referee between Onyx and Kenya, you’re”

“My suggestion has nothing to do with that. Their relationship is solid.”

“Then who would you propose she co-chairs with? Cheryl Lee?”

“Absolutely not. Choose me.”

“You?” I blurt from the shock.

“Kenya?”

“What’s the point of hiding if you’re just going to nullify all my efforts?” Pedro dryly asks.

With no other option, I awkwardly back out from under the desk to face my fate.

“By the way, I’m holding you to your promise sinceIkept up my part of the bargain.” Pedro retakes his seat and continues to eat his lunch.

“What did you agree to?” Cameron’s concern washes over me.

“She owes me one, but I haven’t decided what payment will be yet.”

A staring contest ensues between them. The warm concern from moments ago disappears from Cameron’s green gaze, replaced by aggression and something I can’t identify. Pedro’s behavior is no less confusing. Almost like he’s purposely riling Cameron.

“Kenya, would you mind excusing me and the good mayor?”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea. You seem upset.”

“I’m not upset.” He returns his focus on me, and the warmth from before melts the frost he directed at Pedro. “I promise, you have nothing to worry about.”

Pedro’s relaxed posture doesn’t ease my worry.

“I’ll have Ayana call you in when we’re ready for you. We’ll be fine.” Pedro urges me to leave with a nod toward the door.

Anxiety rides me hard as I exit the room. Only once the door shuts do I realize Cameron never once hinted at our night together. I should be happy, but I’m not. Was sleeping next to me so unremarkable?

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Cameron

The door’s click feels like a foreshadowing, though I’m not sure if something good or bad will be the outcome.
