“It wasn’t as bad as you’re imagining.” I gently push her back onto the bed. “I actually never lived on the streets. I went to my best friend’s house. Her parents raised me. The Houstons gave me everything my biological parents refused to give.”

“I’m glad someone welcomed you into their family. That kind of generosity is rare these days.”

“You have no idea.” At her arched brow, I clarify my statement. “For Khadijah and her family, what I did could have brought a hell of a lot of unnecessary bad things their way, but I was oblivious to the danger. It wasn’t until I was much older when I learned that had my parents cared enough for me, they could have caused serious problems for the Houstons.”

“I take it Khadijah is black.”

I nod.

“Is she adopted?”

“No.”

“Mixed?”

“Not even a little.”

“So your parents could have sent her parents to jail because they took you in?”

“Exactly. You don’t know how much guilt churns in my stomach just thinking about the what ifs. They tried to brush the situation off because my parents weren’t concerned enough to file a missing person report.”

“And probably because you were a child. You were probably more mature for your age than you should have been. I bet the Houstons saw all of that and decided you were worth the risk. They must be amazing people.”

“They are,” I say while staring at Kenya in awe. A thought flits through my mind.I can’t wait to introduce you to them.

I blink double time. I like Kenya and want to see where things go between us, but a serious thought like the one I just had starts a panic inside me.

“You must have been an amazing kid, too, to convince a family to face those odds.” She rests her hand along my jaw and peers deeply into my eyes, stripping my soul bare and quieting my alarm.

Her open acceptance allows me to share some of my antics within the Houston household. As the hours pass by, exhaustion drags at my eyelids. But Kenya doesn’t show any signs of sleepiness. Dryness causes me to close my eyes for a second. While I’m unable to see, I feel Kenya’s fingers brushing against the bridge of my nose and travel to my ear.

Unable to open my eyes, all I can do is listen with my heart open as she says, “I wonder if I spend more time with you if I’ll end up like the Houstons and keeping you when all logic says you’re no good for me.”

I try to respond, but all that comes out is a barely audible hum. The melody that has haunted me since meeting Kenya plays in my mind as unconsciousness wraps me in its warm embrace.

CHAPTERTWELVE

Kenya

My skin feels like fire ants are trailing a path of liquid fire under my skin. I itch and ache. My mysterious ailment causes me to circle my hips to ease my discomfort with the help of the hard protrusion rubbing against the juncture between my thighs. Pleasurable zings gentle the itching but increases the heat inside my body.

I moan as I flex my hips again. As another sound erupts from my soundbox, I startle myself awake. Immediately, I scramble away from the hard lump under me. Realization causes coherent thought to desert me and I instinctively try to get away from—

“Ow,” I groan as my butt lands with a hard thud against the floor, making this the second time one Mr. Cameron Norwick has caused me to bruise my delicate bits within the same week.

I clutch at the bed for leverage and raise myself from the floor. Before me, Cameron lies peaceful and…very aroused. Heat blooms all over my body when I recall that I was humping him in my sleep.

No, it couldn’t have been me. Surely Keating found a way—

You better think twice before you finish that sentence. Don’t go around blaming people for your actions. All I did was sit in the corner eating my popcorn while you molested man candy in his sleep.

You’re saying rubbing up against him was all me?

You and that horny libido you keep denying exists.

I do no—You know what? I’m not playing this game.

What I need to do is leave before he wakes up. I’ll never be able to face him after what I’ve done. It’s bad enough that I can’t remember how he got in my bed in the first place.
