“You did say she was resourceful and broke you out of your cell.” Charred chuckled.
The way he said cell was off. Like it was a joke between them. I shook my head. “Don’t come any closer.”
“Now, now, no one wants to get hurt and we certainly don’t want to hurt you,” the Roulex in the lab coat said. “Why don’t you lie down, and I’ll examine you?”
“Fuck you.” I waved the blade at her.
“God, don’t make me tranq you.” Melody took a small gun from the back of her pants and aimed it at me.
“No need,” Charred said sounding bored. He unhooked his tractor beam, and I dove forward, trying to slip past him.
The other guard blocked my path, and I slashed his arm. Greenish black blood bubbled up from the wound. He hissed at me, backing away.
Before I could take another step, the green beam locked me in place. I watched helplessly as Melody set her gun down on the tray and then pried one of my hands open and then the other, giving the scalpels to the Roulex in the lab coat.
Let me go.I pleaded with my eyes, but she was unphased, flashing me a blinding smile.
“Strap her to the table,” lab coat said.
No, no, no!I struggled, fighting with everything I had in me to break free of the tractor beam, but I couldn’t move. All I could do was blink and breath.
In seconds, Charred and the other Roulex guard had my arms and legs fastened to the freezing metal table. The tractor beam shutting off and Charred hooking the device onto his belt.
“Call me immediately as soon as you know,” Charred said, then grasped Melody’s arm and led her to the door.
“You’re not staying?” the lab coat doctor asked.
“No, Ursmeve, I’ve got to give this one her promised reward for finding the bitch.” He slapped Melody’s ass with his clawed hand, and she squealed in delight. “Vomtr will stand guard while you do your work.”
“And what of her mate? The male Angelimir is dangerous, he will try and rescue her and any potential child.”
“He’s been dealt with.” Charred’s gaze slid from her to me. “I cut him up pretty bad before I discovered this little minx was stuck in here.”
My chest constricted and I couldn’t breathe. The room spun. Xaden had to be okay. He had rapid healing ability that had saved him all the time he’d been in this nightmare. It wouldn’t fail him now. Couldn’t. Except, his wounds had seemed like they’d been taking longer to heal it seemed.
“Come on, I want my reward.” Melody giggled and sashayed out of the room with Charred following after her.
The Roulex guard stood in front of the door, his arms crossed, and his tail pressed to the side.
“Now, just lay back and relax.” The lab coat Roulex leaned over me. Her lab coat said Ursmeve and Charred had called her by her name. “This won’t hurt a bit.”
A stink like something died wafted over me and I gagged.
“What is it?” Her scaled brow furrowed.
I opened my mouth to ask what that smell was, but it was gone as quickly as it had come.
“That’s a good girl.” She grasped my arm, jabbing a shot of something into me.
“What the hell was that?” I didn’t want to get knocked out. I needed to stay awake and figure out how to escape.
“No need for all this drama.” She went to the closet door and pulled a key from around her neck. After a moment, she pushed out an old-looking 3D ultrasound. “I’ve only given you some vitamins for you and the baby.”
I blanched.Baby? Oh God, oh God, no. I didn’t want to have a baby right now and not here with these monsters. The back of my eyes stung with unshed tears.
“If I’m pregnant,” I tried to stall, to think of anything that would help me, “then it’s too soon to see anything even with that ancient equipment.”
“That’s where you’re wrong.” She tsked. “The shot they gave you in your cell was not only to make you more pliable for mating, but it increased your ovulation and ensured the rapid development of any pregnancy.” She nodded to the discard shot on the table. “That one also increases the pregnancy gestation.”
