“He’s not that involved,” I say, trying to assure her. “Foster gives me his time, like today.”

“You said you weren’t sure if he would come when we last talked.”

“He still thinks Zane dislikes him.”

“Zane is worried he’ll hurt you.”

“He won’t. We get along well.”

“In everything?”

I hitch an eyebrow. “Everything?”

Lana lowers her voice. “Is he good in bed?”

My face warms. I usually don’t mind discussing sex with Lana, but since I’ve never slept with Foster, I was hoping to avoid the talk.

“He’s very attentive and passionate,” I lie.

“I’m glad. Nothing kills a romance killer like a guy who’s selfish in bed.”

“I have no issues with Foster,” I respond mechanically.

Lana hugs me, and it makes me feel worse than I already do. Lying to my family and friends is getting harder as my fake marriage grows older.

“What’s that smell?” I ask curiously as we exit the elevator into the penthouse.

Foster smiles. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“It smells like flowers.”

After placing my shoes in the closet, I pad into the kitchen. Colorful wildflowers fill two crystal vases sitting on the counter. In awe, I turn to Foster, who is grinning widely.

“What are these for?” I ask quietly.

“You. I upset you in the limo this morning.”

“Thank you, but you didn’t need to buy me flowers.”

“Do you like them?”

“They’re lovely, but why wildflowers?”

“Because you’re wild and free. You make me feel alive.”

I chuckle as I bend the stem of a daisy to smell its fragrance. “I doubt that.”

“I’ve opened to you more than any other person, even my mother.”

“Why?”

“I like my privacy, but you make me want to reveal things.”

The thought was still bugging me. “Why did you ask me to kiss you last night?”

“I like you. I wanted to kiss you. It’s not the first time we’ve kissed.”

“But, it was different.”
