I yawn, answering. “I would appreciate it. Sugar and milk, please.”

“You don’t have to tell me. I know how you take it.”

I slip onto the stool he vacates to make my coffee, picking up The New York Times he’d been scanning. Foster busies himself with my coffee, making it just the right amount of light that I love. He slides the large black mug across the counter to me once he finishes.

“You read the financials?”

“Not really.” I drop the paper and pick up my mug, sipping from it.

“I could teach you.”

“I should let you since eventually, I’ll be on my own.”

“What are you doing with the money I gave you?”

“It’s sitting in the bank.”

Foster clicks his tongue. “You should let me invest it for you.”

“I have plenty of time to invest for my retirement.”

“There’s no time like the present to invest. You could retire a millionaire many times over.”

I smirk, retorting, “Or I could just marry rich.”

He frowns. “Don’t you want to be independent?”

“I am. It’s not like our marriage is for love and support.”

“I do support you.”

“But, your support is different from a regular husband.”

“Does that bother you?”

“No. I knew what I was getting into when I signed the contract.”

“Why did you sign it?”

“Does it matter?”

He stares at me before saying, “I’d like to know.”

“I was in debt up to my eyeballs. I couldn’t ask Zane to bail me out again. He’s been helping me along for the past few years.”

“That’s it?”

I put my mug down on the counter. “What do you want me to say?”

“Something more intriguing.”

“Like I wanted to see what marriage was all about? A preview of sorts.”

“I didn’t mean it to sound like that.”

I change the subject. “Are you still coming with me today?”

“I said I would. I have a few phone calls to make before we leave.”
