“Is she the only one?”

“That I’ve ever loved?”

“Yes.”

“After her, I didn’t let myself fall in love again. It was too painful. I threw myself into my business.”

I sniffle and dry my nose and eyes with the collar of my robe. “You can’t live your life that way, or you’ll end up alone.”

“I have a wife, my business. I’m not cut out to be a husband.”

“If that’s what you tell yourself, then it will turn out to be true.”

Foster tightens his arm around my waist. He is warm, and because I am exhausted despite having taken a nap a few hours ago, I let myself fall asleep.

When I wake, the room is dark. The sound of even breathing nearby makes me reach out to feel for Foster. I blindly run the pads of my fingers over what feels like his bare chest and down his rippled abs.

“Paige, what are you doing?” he grumbles sleepily.

“Touching you. You have nice skin.”

“Go to sleep.”

“I’m not tired.”

“Come here then.”

I slide across the expanse between Foster and me. Upon reaching him, he takes me into his arms again and holds me against his chest. I plant my hand on his pecs to feel his heart beating a steady, strong beat below the surface.

“Better?” he asks lowly.

“A little.”

“Try to sleep.” He plants a kiss on the top of my head as I close my eyes.

The relationship between us has improved over the past week. We’re back to eating lunch together, and often, he comes home to share dinner with me. I’m sitting at my desk when he pokes his head into my office.

“Lunch?” he asks briefly.

I smile. “Sure, where?”

“Paris.”

“Excuse me?”

“I have to go to Paris for some overseas business. Would you like to join me?”

Excitement churns in my belly. Paris was on my bucket list to visit once I could afford it. Now I would be going for free.

“I’d love to go.”

“You have a passport, right?”

“It’s at home.”

“We leave this evening after work.”

“What about lunch?”

“We can eat at home. We need to pack.”

My body flutters with anticipation and happiness. I’ve never set foot in Europe, and now I was going to one of the most romantic cities on the planet! Part of me wishes it was with someone else, but my husband will have to do.
