Our short exchange puts a pall over the rest of dinner, so we eat in silence. Afterward, I insist on cleaning up, and while I do, Foster leaves to get some work done in his office. A couple of hours later, when he comes back out, he joins me in the living room on the couch as I watch a reality television show.

“What is this?” he asks.

“Marriage at First Sight.”

“Seriously? People marry strangers?”

“That’s a bit hypocritical. We really didn’t know each other.”

“But this is for love, and ours was for money.”

Frowning, I tell him, “That makes me sound like a prostitute.”

“I didn’t mean it to. I’m sorry if it did.”

“Forget it.”

“I have an event to attend this upcoming weekend.”

“Okay, enjoy it.”

“You don’t understand. I want you to attend it with me.”

“How long have you known about this?”

“A couple of months.”

“And you’re telling me now?!” I cry.

“It slipped my mind. I found the invitation in my drawer.”

I scowl, retorting, “I find that hard to believe since you have your schedule on your phone.”

“This was not. I usually just donate.”

“Then why attend?”

“Because I’m married now.”

I shake my head. “I get it; you want to put on a show.”

“Stop putting words in my mouth. I thought it would be nice to go somewhere as a couple.”

“What is this for?”

“A health crisis center.”

“You donate?”

“I donate to several charities. This is just one. Everyone deserves proper healthcare. You should know how good the benefits are at my company. Why do you think that is?”

A smile plays on my lips. “Because you’re a hell of a nice guy?”

“Well, there’s that.”

“But I have nothing to wear.”

“Go shopping. Take a half-day tomorrow.”
