Before I was even out of Foster’s office, he picked up the phone and began speaking in French. I had no idea he could, but I suppose there are many things about him I didn’t know.

I spend most of the day cleaning up the work on my desk. I was on the verge of tears for most of the time too. If this was how Foster acted throughout our marriage, it would take an emotional toll on me. I was placing some files in my desk when I feel a tap on my shoulder. Foster is standing over me and smiling.

“It’s time to go home,” he greets. “Let’s share dinner.”

“Where?”

“My apartment.”

I am about to protest, but I don’t have it in me. I hadn’t eaten anything for lunch except a wheatgrass smoothie and a granola bar.

“Fine. Let me finish filing.”

Foster pulls the folders out of my hand and places them on the desk. “It can wait until tomorrow.”

“Are you sure?”

Again, he smiles. “More than sure.”

I stand, feeling relieved, and he plants a kiss on my cheek, which startles me. When I woke from my daze, I saw several of my coworkers staring at us. It dawns on me that the kiss was for show. Now that the contract was signed and the money transferred, we need to look the part of the happy couple.

Foster helps me with my coat and plants his hand firmly on my back as we head to the elevator. He keeps contact with me as he talks to his vice president of sales, Jack Finer, who joins us while we wait. Once inside the car, he put his arm around my shoulders. It is strange to be so close to a man I disliked for so long. Only now he is growing on me.

“Are we taking the subway?” I ask as we exit onto the main floor. The lobby is teeming with workers getting out for the day, and Foster steers me around them.

“Subway? No. I have my limo waiting.”

I smile excitedly. I love the spaciousness and privacy the car provides. Foster leads me to the curb, and the driver holds the door open for us. Once inside, Foster apologizes for the kiss.

“Why are you apologizing?”

“I know it was unexpected. I should’ve warned you beforehand. We need to make our relationship seem real. It’s important that people don’t question our marriage.”

“Then, we should practice.”

Foster fixes his green eyes on me, slightly narrowing them. “Practice?”

“I’m sure your father will be watching us to see if our relationship is real. We’ve never kissed each other.”

In a flash, Foster is pressing his body against mine, his arm curling around me. His mouth clamps on mine, and for a second, revulsion twisted in my stomach until his lips moved. Oh God, he could kiss so well. His tongue teases the seam of my mouth, and I open to accept him inside. My body responds, heating to the point where my core is flooding. When Foster pulls back, I’m left weak.

He licks his lips and smiles. “Strawberry.”

“I-it’s—it’s my lip gloss.”

“It’s tasty.” Foster uses his pocket handkerchief and swipes it over his mouth before he folds it and holds it out for me. “I smeared it.”

My heart is pounding in my throat, and I find it hard to breathe. As my mind races, thinking what else he could do with his tongue, he chuckles.

“Paige, are you alright?”

I regain my composure and sit up straight. “It was unexpected.”

“Why? Did you think the devil couldn’t kiss properly?”

“Who said anything about a devil?”

“I’m sure you’re in the majority of the staff who thinks I’m evil.”
