“I understand. We won’t speak of this again.”

I pause. “Who says I’m not interested?”

Foster raises his eyebrows. “You are?”

“Maybe. I’d like to know the particulars.”

“We can discuss them when you’re ready. I can take you for a proper lunch during the week.”

Again, he grasps my elbow and led me to the foyer. “You would disrupt your busy business schedule to discuss your personal life?”

“My personal life is my business. This is a business agreement. If you can’t handle it, then tell me now.”

“I can’t tell you until I hear what you want.”

“Lunch on Monday. Be sure to block off at least two hours. I’ll have Peters take you home.”

Sleep was not something that came easily that evening. I spend all day Sunday alone in Zane’s apartment while he and Lana shopped for baby things. Television helps, but my mind keeps wandering to the deal I was about to make with Foster. Maybe it was a deal with the devil, but I would hear him out. Our marriage would put me back in financial security, of which I was sure of even though I didn’t know the terms yet.

“Paige?” Zane asks, drawing me from my thoughts. I pause with my forkful of salad in midair.

I turn to find him and Lana both staring at me. “Huh?”

“Is something wrong? You haven’t seemed right since you came home yesterday.”

“It’s fine.”

“Your date went alright?” Zane probes.

“Yes. It was just lunch.”

“What’s his name?” Lana asks.

I thought for a moment as I put my fork back in my dish. “Robert.”

“Do you like him?”

“I doubt it will work. He’s too…” I say as I think for a moment.

“Too what?”

“Different.” I push my dish away, no longer hungry.

“You’d tell us if something was wrong, wouldn’t you?” Lana asks.

“Of course. Why do you think something is wrong?”

“Today is a beautiful day, and you stayed indoors. That’s not like you.”

“You two don’t have to worry about me. Worry about picking names for the boys.”

“What do you think of Albert or Anthony?” Lana lists.

I scowl and shake my head. “No, too plain. Anything else?”

My brother speaks up. “Jason and Damian?”

“You’ve had months to think up names, and this is what you have?” I say.
