Erika looks shocked to see Foster. “Fos–Foster. How are you? Congratulations on your wedding.” Her fiancé possessively drapes his arm around her shoulders.

“Thank you. This is my wife, Paige. Paige, this is Erika.”

We shake hands, and Erika introduces us to her fiancé, Lincoln Elliott. He is as handsome as Foster, with thick dirty blond hair and bulging muscles straining the arms of his suit. We also shake hands while Erika looks like she wants to be anywhere else. During the awkward small talk, I gauge Foster’s response to her. The dreamy look in his eyes tells me he was lying when he claimed to no longer love Erika.

Staying silent, I wait for them to finish their short exchange, feeling the previously abated nausea building in my gut again. My mouth is dry, and I desperately wish I had something to drink. Their exchange ends, and I spend most of it looking at my blue heels. I don’t realize I am clenching my fists so hard that my nails leave impressions in my palms until I open them once we’re in the back of the limo. Staring out the window, I steel myself for the conversation I am about to have with Foster.

Eyes averted from his, I say, “You’re still in love with her.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” he rebukes. “That boat has sailed.”

I turn to him, unable to hold back. “Don’t fucking lie to me! I know what I saw.”

Foster slides across the bench seat and takes hold of my chin. “And what did you see?”

“Love. You love her! I’m a placeholder. Are you waiting for her relationship to fail? Will you kick me to the curb when that happens?”

“It will never happen!” he snaps. “I love you, and only you.”

“Is that what you tell yourself?”

“I tell myself the truth. I love you.” Foster presses his lips against mine, still holding my face in his hand. I bite him, hard, and he recoils away with a yelp. “What the fuck was that for?”

“You’re a liar. Leave me alone.” I turn back to the window, squinting through the sun even though the windows are tinted. Foster gives up trying to appease me with a huff and begins typing on his phone. I am a fool to believe him, and now I have proof that he is in love with another woman.
