“There are ways. Like I said, if you love her, don’t jump to conclusions.”

“You sound pretty wise. Have you been through it?”

“A few times. Don’t let it get you down or interfere with what you have planned.”

“Thanks. I appreciate the support.”

He checks his watch and tells me that he has another meeting in half an hour. I thought I was busy. I need to get to work on some items that are sitting in my email box. We walk out together, and he tells me that he’ll send over the proposal to my attorney.

While I’m in the cab, I hear my phone chime. I’m not sure I want to check after last night, so I leave it in my suit pocket until I get into my office.

I haven’t heard from you. I miss you. It’s boring in Virginia.

I’m tempted to mention the text from the night before with the picture. It doesn’t look like she’s bored to me since she’s kissing other men. But I decide not to condemn her before we have a discussion. I’m taking Jordan’s advice.

I’ve been busy. I just got home from my meeting with Jordan Grayson.

Did it go well? Is he going to invest?

It looks that way. I have some calls to make. Can I talk to you later?

Yeah, sure. Is anything wrong?

No. Everything is fine. I’ll see you tomorrow.

I love you. I’ll come over as soon as I get back into the city.

I love you, too.

I didn’t want to type that, but I do just because she’ll question why I did not. I do love her, but if the picture is real, then my heart is going to shatter. Losing her would be devastating, but if we can’t have trust in our relationship, then it’s worthless to me.

The rest of the weekend finds me unfocused and scattered. I can’t concentrate on what I need to get done. As the time nears for Lana to come home, I grow more agitated. I want answers, and I try to calm myself because if I don’t, I’ll go off on her the minute she walks through the door.

I drink a couple of beers, and when she finally comes through the door, I’m a bit more relaxed than before I drank them. I make no move to get up from the couch, and she leaves her suitcase in the foyer to rush to me. I give her a weak hug, and she automatically knows something is wrong.

“What’s the matter?”

I say nothing and call up the picture on my phone, handing it to her. I watch her face turn to a frown as she hands the cell back to me.

“You think I cheated on you?” she says quietly.

“I don’t think anything. I want to hear what you have to say.”

“Zane, you think I cheated, or else why would you even show me this?”

“I’m showing it to you because it was sent to me on Friday night when you were away. Did you read the comment?”

“I did,” she takes her phone out of her purse and scrolls through some pictures then hands it to me. I stare at the picture. It’s the same one that was sent to my phone but date stamped over a year ago.

“Lana, what was I supposed to think? I had no idea.”

“You were supposed to give me the benefit of the doubt. I love you, but if you can’t trust me, then we have nothing.”

“I’m sorry. Who would send this to me? Do you recognize the phone number it came from?”

“I have a feeling Alicia did it but from one of my cousin’s phones. It has a Virginia area code. We had a big fight after we arrived at my aunt’s house. She didn’t want to sleep in a twin bed. She wanted to push them together and have me sleep on the chaise. I told her, hell no.”

“I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions. I can’t lose you.”
