I’m dumbfounded, and I just sit there as she gets up and leaves me there. Maybe Lana is too much trouble. She’s several years younger than me, and I should just forget her. After a few minutes, I get up and go back to the VIP area. Jeffrey is there with Grace, and Lana is sitting with him. He’s ignoring her, and each time she tries to talk to him, he shrugs her off, concentrating his full attention on my best friend.

I just sit back on the far end of the couch and order another vodka from the waitress. I have other things to worry about since Paige is still dancing with the guy she met on the dance floor. I need to keep an eye on my little sister. I’m not paying attention to what is going on around me until I hear Jeffrey snap at Lana.

“Can’t you see I’m busy? You’re so clingy. Just stop it.”

I see a look of hurt come over Lana, and I immediately feel sorry for her. Paige is on her way up the stairs with her new beau, and I move near Lana to make room. She’s sulking, and I gently stroke her arm, lean in, and kiss her cheek. Jeffrey is not paying her any mind, so I get away with that. She smiles and squeezes my arm.

“Come with me,” I mouth and shake my head towards the stairs. Lana nods, and I go first, waiting for her at the bottom. When she comes, I firmly take her hand and walk her out to the warm summer night.

“He’s not for you. I would never talk to you that way. Maybe he’s the one you shouldn’t be wasting your time with.”

“But he knows my family. Our mothers went to college together. I haven’t seen him in years, but I had a crush on him when we were younger.”

“So, that means you should be treated poorly?”

“It’s just that my mother was so happy when we told her we were seeing each other.”

“Lana, do you want to date him? Just tell me, and I won’t pursue you anymore. I’ll forget you.”

Her face contorts in pain, “I don’t want that.”

“Which?”

“I don’t want you to forget me.”

“There you are,” we both look up and see Jeff heading towards us. “I thought you disappeared. Everyone is going to another club. I’d like to hang out with Grace, and you should come.”

To me, it sounds like he wants to date Grace and have Lana tag along. I hope she does the right thing and tells him to shove off.

“I’m tired. Zane was just leaving, so he’s going to drop me off.”

“You have a car?”

“No, but we’re going to share a cab. Lana mentioned she liked ice cream, so I thought we would stop before we go home.”

“Where is an ice cream place open around here?”

“This place called Butler’s on the upper west side.”

“Never heard of it. See that she gets home, alright. Thanks.”

I look over at Lana, and she has the widest grin, “You want me to come to your place for ice cream?”

“I bought several pints this week. You have your pick.”

“What kind?”

“Does it matter?”

“It does if you want me to come over to your place.”

“Pistachio, chocolate chocolate chip, mint chip, banana, and butter pecan.”

“That’s a lot of ice cream.”

“It’s better than drinking. Is the variety good enough for you?”

“Yes. I’m definitely coming.”
