“I want that. I want you too.”

“I do have one concession, and if you don’t agree, then everything is off.”

Her face clouds as she knits her eyebrows together, “What is it?”

“We need to go see Dr. Amundsen. You were willing to do it years ago to save our relationship.”

“I’ll agree.”

“I want to kiss you right now, but I don’t want you to get sick.”

“Will you take care of me if I do?”

“You know I would.”

“Then the hell with being sick. Kiss me.”

She bends down and takes my face in her hands, pressing her lips firmly upon mine. We don’t go any further, just stay lip locked for a few seconds.”

“You’re not as hot. I think your fever is decreasing.”

I just notice that the ace bandage that she had removed a couple of days ago is back on her wrist.

“What happened? I thought your wrist was feeling better.”

“I tried to get you into bed myself and hurt it again. That’s when I called Lucian. Even he had a hard time getting you back in.”

“Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry. I meant to text Lucian. I guess I was bordering on delirium, and I hit the wrong entry on my phone.”

She gives me a hurt look, and I regret what I said.

“I would have come, no matter how angry you were with me. I can’t remember you being this sick when we were last together.”

“I think it’s the stress of everything plus after you left, I took a walk, and it started to pour. I was soaked when I got back up here.”

“Is that what the puddle by the island is from?”

“I stopped to read your note then went to take a shower. I felt horrible in more ways than one when I came out, so I didn’t feel up to wiping it up.”

“I cleaned it and did some laundry. You left your wet sweats in the closet, and there were wet clothes in the hamper. I was afraid everything would mildew. When you’re up to it, I’d like to change the sheets.”

“Lana, you don’t have to wait on me hand and foot.”

“It’s what you do when you love someone.”

She kisses me on the forehead again and leaves the room. I snuggle under the covers, quickly falling back to sleep. When I wake next, the room is dark, and I have to pee in the worst way. I gingerly push the covers off me and swing my legs over the edge of the bed, testing them to see if they’ll hold me if I stand. I think they will.

Snapping the light on next to the bed, I gasp in surprise as I see Lana sitting with her head lolled to the side, asleep. She looks horribly uncomfortable. I stand, trying not to disturb her and slowly walk to the bathroom. When I finish, she’s standing at the door, waiting to walk me back to bed.

“Why didn’t you wake me? I don’t want you walking to the bathroom by yourself.”

“I’m fine, and you looked very uncomfortable sitting in the chair. Why don’t you join me in bed?”

“Zane, I didn’t want to intrude, but I wanted to be close to you in case you needed me.”

“Lana, you don’t have to worry about intruding. I want you here. I want you next to me. I want you in my bed. There are so many things that I want from you.”

“I want this to work out between us. I don’t want to be apart from you.”
