I lean against the door jamb thinking about what I’m going to say to her. How do I start this conversation without being confrontational? A couple of minutes go by, and she finally answers the door. She looks hot even though she’s only wearing light wash denim and a long-sleeved pink blouse.

“What’s up?”

I clear my throat. “I need to talk to you.”

“Sounds serious.”

“It sort of is.”

“Well, then sit down and talk while I finish getting dressed.”

She lowers herself onto the padded cream bench at the end of her bed, then pulls on a pair of light pink socks. I notice that she painted her toenails white since I last saw them bare a couple of days ago. I think they look sexy. Distracted, I take a seat on the corner of the bed, several feet away, and clear my throat.

“I’m just going to come right out and say it. Do we have any chance of getting together, or am I just deluding myself?”

She pauses, then glances at me. “There’s a chance, but I told you I need time. My relationship with Joshua wasn’t great, and I’m still dealing with that. I just need to work on me before I give myself to someone, even you.”

I grin. “I just wanted to know if I was in the running.”

“You are,” she assures, “Just give me some time.”

I’m satisfied with her explanation, and I kiss the top of her head in appreciation before I leave to get my shoes. I only wonder how long I’m going to have to wait.

The next two weeks bring days of rain. Halloween will be here soon, and Jordan reaches out to tell me that he’s throwing a costume party at his penthouse. I haven’t been to one, but I tell him that I would love to come. I’ve also never been to the Ballard Building, where he lives.

Lexi told me that the place is incredible, especially since her sister, Emma, added some homey touches to the previously sterile space. I can’t wait to see what it looks like.

In another couple of weeks, Olivia will be leaving me for her soon to be vacated apartment. Nothing more has been said about us getting together, and I feel as though we’re more like roommates than potential lovers.

Olivia has been distant lately. I barely see her at work or at home. She’s been spending a lot of time with Lexi and Matty. One night I overheard her making plans for moving out of my place, but she seemed anxious to go. At this point, we don’t even seem like friends. Since our talk, she also hasn’t slept in my bed. I think she doesn’t want to give me false hope. Maybe she doesn’t want to date me at all. If that’s the case, then I wish she would tell me. Not that I plan on dating anyone else. But she is the one I want, so not knowing is making things hard.

Later, while I’m at my desk, I try to decide what costume I should wear. Jordan’s party is only a couple of days away, and I still haven’t a clue. Olivia is going as Princess Leia. I was thinking of going as a stormtrooper or Darth Vader, but she said it would look like we were together. I wasn’t exactly happy that she voiced it, but I hid my disappointment.
