“This time, I’m not letting you make the decisions. I should have fought for you. We’re going to get you better. Get some rest. I’m going to speak with Jordan about getting you in a day or two. I’ll be in touch.”

Her voice starts to falter when she says, “Thank you, Luc.”

“Anything for you.”

After we hang up, I call Jordan to make arrangements to get Olivia. He tells me that he can have the jet out to her tomorrow afternoon. I tell him my plan, and he says he can get a nurse from New York, so there are no issues getting her back to Chicago. After arrangements are made, I call Olivia again.

“Who the fuck is this?” an obnoxious voice answers.

“Excuse me? Where’s Olivia?”

“She’s sick. She can’t come to the phone. Who is this?”

“Lucian.”

“Oh, the asshole that sends her all the sappy emails and texts. Yeah, I’ve seen them. She doesn’t deserve the sentiment.”

“Are you fucking insane? She’s sick! How can you treat her that way?”

“It’s not hard. She hasn’t been the best at anything to tell you the truth. She isn’t the first person to get cancer, and she won’t be the last. My mother had cancer and still kept house and took care of four kids. I get nothing like that from Olivia. I don’t even get a hot meal. It’s the least she could do since I’m paying all the bills.”

“You’re supposed to love her! You’re engaged.”

“We were engaged. Anyway, it’s none of your business. I gotta figure out where to put her since she ain’t my problem anymore.”

I hear the phone click in my ear. I paced the floor as I call Jordan back.

“We need to get her tomorrow morning,” I instantly say, not waiting for him to speak. “Tonight. I want to go tonight.”

“Lucian, why the hurry?”

I explain the exchange I just had with Joshua. He didn’t care about her and who knew what he was going to do. I couldn’t just sit around until Saturday afternoon.

“Please, Jordan. I need to get to her now.”

“I can have Albert pick you up in a half-hour. I’ll get the plane gassed up, but I’m not sure if I can get a nurse this fast.”

“It’s a two-hour flight; I think she’ll be fine. I just need to get her out of there.

“What about the drive to and from the airport?”

I suck in a breath. “I hadn’t thought of that.”

“I can get in touch with my contacts in Chicago. We can get a car service to transport you to and from. Get ready, Albert will be there soon.”

I hang up and pace. When I get too agitated, I travel down to the street to get some fresh air. I let the cool breeze rush over my body, but it couldn’t soothe me. By the time Albert arrives, I am wound up tighter than a top. I slip into the back of the limo and chew on my thumbnail while he drives to LaGuardia.

In forty-five minutes, we are airborne. I debate contacting Olivia. If she were asleep, that asshole would know that I was on my way. He was in for a big surprise when I knocked on the door. I refuse any refreshments the one flight attendant offers.

The plane touches down at Midway Airport around 10:30 PM. A limo is waiting, and I practically sprint off the plane and jump in, giving the driver the address. I was in such a hurry that I didn’t initially notice the two men sitting in the opposite bench seat in the darkened interior.

“Can I help you, gentleman?” I ask, glancing between them.

“Mr. Grayson hired us to make sure things go smoothly tonight.”

“Are you expecting trouble?”

“No, and we want to keep it that way.”
