After a few seconds, she pulls at the delicate ribbon and slides off the cover. I watch as she covers her mouth with her hand.

“This is too much. I can’t accept this.”

“You’ll hurt my feelings if you don’t. I want you to have it. I searched until I found the right gift for you to remember me by.”

Inside the box is a charm bracelet. Each of the eight, tiny, twenty-four-carat gold charms represents something in New York: The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Rockefeller Center, The Yankees, Madison Square Garden, and Grand Central Station.

“Can you put it on me?” she asked, holding it out to me.

Moving close, I open the clasp and slide it around her wrist so I can secure it properly. Touching her is torture because it causes me to get turned on. Her scent fills my nose, and it stokes my desire. I secure my urge and quickly back away.

“Do you like it?”

“I love it. Thank you so much.”

She stands and tilts her head to kiss my cheek. Her lips burn me as they press against my skin.

“When you look at it, remember me.”

“I could never forget you, Lucian. We can email and text.”

“It’s not what I want to force you, but I’ll take what you can give me.”

Olivia strokes my face, and I know it’s time for me to leave before I do something that I shouldn’t.

“I have to go. Let me know when you get to Chicago. Be safe.”

I grasp her hand and squeeze it, but she pulls me towards her. I bring her into my arms and bury my head in her hair, not wanting to let go. I know this is goodbye and that I’ll probably never see her again. As I leave her office, I realize that I’ve lost her forever.
