“Yes. I wanted something to do, but I saw him there and was lucky to find my friends. He backed off, but he must have been watching us. What does he want?”

“I don’t know. He could have stopped and spoken to me, but I’m sure he has a plan. There’s something else I didn’t tell you about Barrett. When we were children, he tended to have outbursts. He was violent at times with my mother, especially after my father became abusive.”

I glare. “Don’t you think it might have been important for you to tell me that? I’m going to have to let Lexi know that we might have a problem. I can’t leave her in the dark and have this maniac come and hurt her looking for CJ!”

“You should take a leave of absence from Nolan,” Chase instructs. “You said we have a situation there. Maybe you should take some time and let it blow over.”

“I’m not doing that! Then it will look like I’m guilty of something.”

“I can’t protect you if you don’t listen to me.”

“Why can’t we go to the police? Why didn’t you go to the police when you were sure he was the one that hit you?”

“I feel guilty. I stayed away from my home, and Barrett had to deal with all the shit. It never helps that my father always favored me.”

“You were a boy,” I stress. “You can’t blame yourself.”

“I should have protected Barrett. I was his big brother.”

“But he’s an adult now. If he has an axe to grind, he should come out and say it.”

“He won’t. He was always internalized his feelings. Barrett was like a tea kettle with the top closed. The pressure would build until he exploded. It was why he was so good on the football field.”

“Well, this isn’t high school anymore.”

Chase shakes his head. “I need you to promise me that you’ll be careful no matter what you decide to do.”

“Are you still planning to stay away from us?”

“I have to until I can figure out how to get to Barrett. I don’t want it on my conscience if he hurts you or anyone else because of me. I love you, Megan. You’re my family.”

“Barrett’s your family too.”

“He is, but I don’t know him anymore. He’s as good as a stranger.”

Frustrated, I don’t want to discuss Barrett anymore and change the subject. “Do you want to have dinner here, or are you leaving?”

“I can stay the night, but it will be the last time for a while.”

I check the monitor and see that CJ is fast asleep. He usually takes a two-hour nap, so we have time. I’m a ball of emotions, but an aching, physical need for Chase quickly mounts in me when reality of our separation sets in. Crawling over to Chase, I begin to kiss his tanned skin just above the V in his scrub top. A rumble comes from his throat as my tongue strokes his neck.

“Mmm, I like that,” he moans.

“CJ will be asleep for a while,” I hint.

“Then let’s make good use of the time we have.”

He stands and takes my hand, leading me to my bedroom. There, he slowly undresses me, kissing my body wherever he can from top to bottom. His lips leave a trail of flames on my skin. As I sit on the bed, he pulls off his scrub top. The muscles of his stomach are ridged and tempted; I run my fingers over them. I’ve wanted to do a certain something for the past few days, so I pull the drawstring on his tented pants.

Chase slides the garment over his hips and steps out of them when it hits the floor. He’s standing before me naked, and I grasp his hot length, stroking it slowly. He groans loudly as he steps closer, and I flick my tongue over his head to lick the bead of cum that has formed there.

“You taste good,” I whisper.

“Not as good as you do.”

I take the swollen tip into my mouth and swirl my tongue over it. With a slight thrust of his hips, Chase is halfway down my throat. I caress his balls, fondling them in my palm. Wanting to kiss the scars on his pelvis and thighs, I do. When I look up at him, his lips are pursed as if he expects pain when I touch the healed flesh.

“I wish we were together when it happened. You would have cared for me.”
