When he comes home, I have everything packed, and CJ is dressed to go.
“What’s this?” he says, gesturing to my bag.
“I have to go home tonight.”
“Why?”
“Chase, I have work tomorrow. I need to get back into the swing of things, and I don’t have any dress clothes here.”
“I know, but I thought you would stay the night.”
“Sorry, I didn’t know you expected it.”
“Well, after a fourteen-hour shift at the hospital, I wanted to spend time with my son and girlfriend.”
My body tingles at the word, girlfriend. He considers me his girlfriend now. It’s what I’ve wanted to hear for months.
Instead of reacting excitedly, I tell him, “We had some drama today.”
“Oh? What happened?”
“CJ had a fever.”
Chase says nothing but reaches over to touch CJ’s head as I hold him in my arms.
“He seems cool now.”
“He’s back to normal, thankfully. Lexi was here for lunch with Arabella, and I wasn’t sure what to do since CJ has never been sick or feverish. Lexi suggested giving him a cool bath since the heat probably got to him after we went to the park.”
“Was he shaded?”
“Yes, I had the cover on the stroller over him, and we were sitting under a tree. I also had a hat on him.”
Chase nods. “Can I hold him before you leave?”
“Chase, do you want me to stay?”
“I do. I missed you and CJ.”
“If you want, I could go back to my apartment and get some more clothes. What time are you working tomorrow?”
“I have a shift that starts at ten, but I’ll be home after eleven in the evening.”
“So, I would be disturbing you if I got up for work at six.”
“I want you to disturb me. I enjoy having you near.”
“Ok, let me get CJ ready for bed, and I’ll leave right after.”
“Go ahead and leave now. I’ll get him to bed, and he’ll be asleep by the time you get back.”
“Chase, you must be exhausted after such a long day. Before I go, can I make you something to eat?”
“I’m not hungry,” he dismisses. “I just want to lie in bed with you.”
My belly constricts, and I have a feeling we’re not just going to be lying in bed.
“Then take CJ, and I’ll be back soon,” I promise.
