“Worried I might give you something?”

“For a moment. You’re going to pay for your little joke.”

“Oh? What do you plan to do?”

“You’ll see. Are you free tonight?”

“I have plans with my family.”

“And after?”

“I might go out with Hunter and Rory.”

“So, you’ll be home late tonight?”

“Very. We’re going to a club in midtown. Hunter is friends with the owner.”

“Does this club have a name?”

“Vibes. Have you heard of it before?”

“I’m afraid I haven’t. Enjoy yourself. I was hoping we could get together, but maybe we can tomorrow.”

“I’ll let you know.”

I get up to leave his office, but he rounds his desk. The first thing I notice is that he’s no longer is using his cane. Behind him, it’s leaning against the wall near his chair. As I’m processing that, he pulls me against him, aggressively locking our lips in a kiss, which leaves me breathless. I feel weak when Chase releases me and grip his desk for support.

“What was that for?”

“Do you remember what you’re missing while you’re at that club.”

He lets me go and takes a seat at his desk once more. Chase says nothing further to me, and I’m left dazed by his behavior while trekking to my cubicle. The office is empty when I get back while I gather my things to leave. Lexi texts me as I sling my purse over my shoulder.

L: Are you bringing your friend to dinner?

M: Which friend? Chase?

L: Yes.

M: I guess I could ask, but he might have plans.

I know Chase doesn’t have plans, but I’m not sure he would want to join my family for dinner. I head out to the elevator, and Chase is waiting there when I arrive.

“Not working late tonight?” I ask.

“I decided not to. I might have a thing or two to keep me busy.”

“Would you like to join my family for dinner? Lexi asked if you were coming.”

“And you told her what?”

“I said I would need to talk to you first.”

“Miss Stanford, why didn’t you say that in my office?”

“Chase–”

“Dr. Pearce.”
