“Don’t question me!” he snaps, then takes a breath. “Please, call the front desk and tell them to let me up.”

“You’re downstairs now?”

“Yes, I have been for the last half hour.”

“I’ll call them as soon as we hang up.”

“Very good.”

What the hell is he doing here? I thought I wouldn’t see him until Monday. I call the front desk, confirm he’s okay to be allowed upstairs, and then promptly hurry to drag my laundry into the bedroom closet. I don’t want my mess sitting on the couch when he arrives. I can only assume that his apartment is immaculate, just like he keeps himself. I wouldn’t want him thinking I’m a slob even though I sometimes can be. I hear the doorbell ring, and I run to the door to open it.

“Miss Stanford.” Chase breezes in holding a bag. He smells wonderful, a new cologne maybe? He hasn’t shaved, and the stubble on his face only makes him look more alluring than normal. Scanning him, I’m slightly shocked at the casualness of his outfit. His polo shirt hugs his body, and this is the first time I’ve seen him in jeans instead of his usual slacks. He looks as delicious as the goodies he has.

“I brought bagels and Danishes.”

“Is this a reward for going to the clinic?”

“No, it’s just a friendly visit.

“Are you checking up on me? Making sure I didn’t have one last fling with Steven before we get together?”

“Why do you always think the worst of me?”

“I don’t, but you are bossy.”

“I’m not bossy. I’m a good business manager.”

“Is that what this is to you, a business proposition?”

“Not at all. If this arrangement is too much for you, then we can call it off.”

Is he kidding? I’m too far gone to say no. I want him so badly that I wish my test results came in immediately.

“It’s not too much for me,” I say, “I’ve had complicated relationships.”

“Let’s be clear; this is not a relationship.”

“I understand that, Dr. Pearce.”

If looks could kill!

“Stop calling me Dr. Pearce. It’s Chase. I think you deliberately enjoy riling me up. As long as we’re out of the office, you can call me Chase.”

“Oh, so when I orgasm and call your name, it should be Chase?”

“If you must.”

I give him a dry look, then ask, “Would you like coffee?”

“Please. Milk and sugar if you have it.”

“I have no milk. I’ve been behind in my shopping.”

“If you had answered your phone, I would have picked some up.”

“I was doing laundry and playing a game, so I powered it down before it sapped my battery.”

“And you didn’t think to bring your charger?”
