I snorted, “Distraction? How? Bright sunshine, hot sand, gentle breezes. Sounds like the perfect place to write.”

“That is distracting, and so are you. I planned to write while I was here, but you shot that to hell.”

I chuckled. “I’m not stopping you.”

“But you are, even if you don’t mean to.”

Austin leaned over and lifted my hand to his mouth, taking my index finger into it and sucking the pad. A burst of desire surged through me, and I pulled away.

“Too much?” He asked.

“No, I liked it. I should go back and check my phone.”

He scowled. “For what?”

I sat up, swinging my legs over the side of the chaise. “I’m on call, but only if it’s urgent.”

“You have employees to put out fires, don’t you?”

“Yes, but I’m a better negotiator.”

“They can live without you. I don’t want to share.”

Two days later and we still weren’t having sex. Austin seduced me with his mouth and his tongue, but that’s as far as it went. I was crazy with lust, and this morning gave in and got myself off in the shower. I couldn’t wait any longer, and I was too proud to beg.

As demanding as I was in the office, I stowed the tiger in bed. My previous boyfriend liked me passive, especially since I had the upper hand when it came to our careers. I gave in because I wanted to make him happy. It was a waste of time because we didn’t make it anyway.

My usual daily practice was to sit out on the deck in my bikini waiting for Austin to swim over, but today it was well after 11:00 and he hadn’t shown up. I sent him a quick text, but it wasn’t returned. I let it go. We weren’t dating, and I had no hold on him. I had no plans to chase Austin.

By 11:30, the skies had grown gray, and with it came a heavy breeze. I decided to go inside and wait out the storm. It was out of the rainy season in The Maldives, but they still got quick rainstorms here and there. I was about to change from my pale yellow bikini when I heard a knock at the door. I opened it just as the first sprinkles of rain hit the ground. Austin stood there with a backgammon board and a brown bag in his hand.

“I texted you,” I said with annoyance.

“Can I come in before I get soaked?”

“If you must.”

I walked away, and he shut the door after he entered.

“What’s the matter?” He asked.

I ignored him, looking out the slider at the rain as it came down harder. “Nothing. I’m fine.”

Austin put the items he carried down on the table and came over to where I stood looking out the window. His arms circled my waist, and I pushed them away, moving to the couch.

“Samantha, there’s something wrong.”

“Nothing is wrong.”

Austin sat a couple of feet away so as not to crowd me. “Spill it. What’s your problem?”

I narrowed my eyes. “You are. What game are you playing?”

He smirked. “I’m not playing any type of game. Why would you say that?”

“We talk about having sex, and all you do is kiss me.”

“Is that what this is about? I’m not going to throw you on the bed and ravage you like I’m a wild animal. Is that what you want? You want me to pound you so hard that you scream?”
