“I’m sorry. That must be tough since you want your family to get along with your fiancé. We never had that problem.”

“No, they loved you until you broke my heart.”

“And I feel like shit about it. Does your dad still golf? Maybe we can drive up to the Rye Golf Club; I know he loved it there when we used to go.”

“He would love that, but Noah would probably freak out that my ex had a golf outing with my father.”

“Then ask Noah to come.”

“Noah hates golf. He says it’s the most frustrating game he ever tried to play. He has no patience for it.”

JC grins. “So, something I’m better at than him.”

I shake my head. “It’s not a contest, and I’m not the prize.”

“I didn’t mean to imply that you were.”

I dismiss him. “Thank you for the shake, but I have work to do.”

“I’ll talk to you later. Think about golf.”

Ha, I could see my father telling my mother that he’s going to play golf with JC. She would yell at him and ask him how he could spend the day with someone who broke his little girl’s heart.

I sip at the shake that JC got me, it’s wonderful, and I’m grateful because the more I drink the more I realize that I was so hungry. I finish it and go back to work, but I can’t concentrate. I keep thinking what’s waiting for me when I get home. I know that Noah will be in a foul mood, probably more than the one he was in when we last spoke.

I trudge on, and at 4:45, Nikki comes in to show me graphics on her tablet. She tells me she emailed them to me, but I didn’t answer. I check my email and she’s right; she sent them for approval a half-hour ago. They’re good and I knew I could count on her. I give my authorization.

“Do you mind if I leave for the day?” Nikki asks.

“I think it would be okay. I’m leaving in a few minutes.”

“Thank you.”

The train ride home is not pleasant. The car is packed with people who smell like they just ran a marathon. The man next to me is wearing jogging attire, and he’s soaked with sweat. To top it off, with each lurch of the train, he rubs his sweaty body against me. Tonight, first thing is a shower.

It’s hot out, and the sidewalks are teeming with pedestrians. I’m envious of the ones dressed in shorts and t-shirts like they don’t have a care in the world. By the time I get in the door of our building, I’m the one sweating and smelling like I ran a marathon. Of course, the minute I get in the apartment, Noah stalks out of his office with an angry look on his face.

“Where’s Megan?”

“She went to have dinner with one of her friends. She said she would be back by seven. That gives us enough time to talk. Come to my office.”

It’s a demand, not a request. I’m not one of his fucking employees.

I clear my throat. “I’d like to change first. Maybe take a quick shower.”

He clenches his fists at his sides, and the knuckles turn white. “And I don’t want to wait to say this.”

“Noah, I’m hot and tired. I worked all day, and I want to be comfortable. If you want to talk, then come into the bathroom with me while I shower.”

He stares at me and crosses his arms but I’m not giving in. I need to freshen up and if he doesn’t want to wait, too bad. I head to the bedroom with him right behind me. He stands there while I undress and grab my robe then follows me into the bathroom, not saying a word while I step into the shower.

Noah is still there leaning against the vanity when I get out, and he looks hungrily at my body but keeps his arms crossed while he does it. He hasn’t said a word and as soon as I’m dressed, he takes me by the hand and leads me to his office.

“Sit. I want to get this out before Megan comes home.”

Now it’s my turn to cross my arms and stare at him. I don’t hide my annoyance.

“I would’ve appreciated a heads up with Megan. Do you know what she did to me after she got here? She began questioning me about our relationship. What the fuck did you tell her?” he growls.
