“You sound upset. She cheated on me.”
“What was her response?”
“She started to cry and begged my forgiveness. I asked her how many more there were. She admitted to three more. I think it’s higher than that.”
I fixed my eyes on his. “JC, did you ever cheat on her?”
“Why would you ask me that?”
“You know why.”
“No. I thought about it, but I didn’t. I’m not that person anymore.”
“So, what is your game plan?”
“I told her I would pack her things, and she can come get them whenever she gets back. The apartment is in my name only. She can go back to live with her parents. Their apartment is much nicer than mine; I’m sure she’ll love moving back there.”
“How do you feel about everything?”
“I feel free. I woke up this morning and was whistling. I can get used to sleeping alone again. I want it. Are we on for burgers tonight?”
“I can’t. Noah got home yesterday, and Megan is coming over this afternoon. Should be fun since they don’t really get along.”
“Oh. He doesn’t like Megan?”
“He says she’s too much like my father, always questioning him. He hates when people invade his privacy.”
Fuck, I forgot to remind Noah that Megan is coming over this afternoon. It also means that we won’t be able to discuss it until she goes home tomorrow.
“Oh, one of those.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“I question when someone is so private. Does he have something to hide?”
“Not at all. Noah runs a business where he needs to maintain confidentiality. He can’t talk about his clients, or they would never hire him again.”
“I just find it strange when someone is so closed off.”
“He’s not closed off.”
“Not when he has alcohol in him.”
“I don’t like where this conversation is going. Do you have something to say about him?”
“Yes, I do. I don’t like how he treated you on Memorial Day weekend. He embarrassed you.”
I begin to laugh, and JC gives me an annoyed look.
“YOU don’t like how he embarrassed me? You used to do it to me all the time.”
JC grips the chair arms. “I was an immature dick. Is that what you want me to say? I would never do it to you now if you were mine.”
“But I’m not. Now you can have whoever you want. You’re free to fuck as many women as you like.”
He rose from his chair to leave, but not before he left me a parting word.
“The woman I want is unavailable, and I will regret that for the rest of my life.”
